How it works
These 2d shapes worksheets are made fresh each time you press New sheet. The first one asks for the names of 12 flat shapes, each turned a different way and drawn at its own size, with a word bank for spelling. Switch to matching, a sides and corners table, color by shape, sorting or flat or solid, then print on Letter or A4 with the answer key.

Seven tasks from one set of shapes
The On the sheet menu chooses the task. Its last choice, Mix several tasks, lets tasks share the sheet. Name the shape is the plain shape identification worksheet: a drawing, a line to write on and a word bank. Match shape to name joins up to 6 shapes to 6 mixed-up names. Sides and corners table asks for 2 counts per shape. Color by shape asks for 4 kinds in red, blue, yellow and green, then how many of each. Sort by a rule puts 6 to 8 lettered shapes into two boxes, such as Has a curved side. Flat or solid and Name the solid bring in 6 solid shapes.
Turned, resized and drawn more than one way
A child who has only met the triangle with a flat base has learned a picture, not a shape. So each shape is drawn at its own size and, with Turn the shapes ticked, turned in steps of 15 degrees. The triangle comes in 4 forms and the rectangle in 2. A square standing on a corner is still a square. The rhombus is drawn narrower, so the two can be told apart. Under Which shapes, pick First 6, 10 shapes or All 12.
Printing, the answer key and the sheet code
Print or PDF gives a black and white sheet for Letter or A4 with a Name, Date and Score line. The answer key follows on its own page unless you untick Answer key after the sheet, under More options. One task with 6 to 20 shapes fits one page. A mix can run to 2 pages or more, and the line under the preview says how many. Every sheet and key carries a 6-character code, and Share link reopens the exact sheet, so a key printed next week still fits. Nothing is checked on screen: this is a tool for paper.
- A square standing on a corner gets called a diamond. Have the child turn the paper until it sits flat, then name it again.
- Color by shape needs 4 crayons: red, blue, yellow and green. Up to 3 shapes fit no rule and stay white, so say this is on purpose.
- Ask for the most exact name. A square is also a rectangle in later grades, but the key says square, and every rectangle here is much longer than it is wide.
- On the sides and corners table, have pupils tick each side as they count. Circle and oval are 0 and 0. The semicircle is 1 straight side and 2 corners.
- Writing the names is a job of its own. Type them into the handwriting worksheet generator for a tracing sheet of the words.
Questions and answers
Is a 2d figures worksheet the same as a 2D shapes worksheet?
Yes. Some math programs say figure where others say shape, and both mean a flat outline with length and width but no depth. The work is the same: name the shape, count its straight sides and corners, and sort by what you counted.
How do I set up a worksheet of shapes for kindergarten?
Under Which shapes, choose First 6. Set Shapes to 6 or 8. Start with Match shape to name or Color by shape, which need no writing. Keep Turn the shapes ticked: the Common Core kindergarten standard asks children to name shapes regardless of their orientation or overall size.
Can I make 2d 3d shapes worksheets here?
Yes, two kinds. Flat or solid mixes flat shapes with a cube, rectangular prism, sphere, cone, cylinder and pyramid, and the child writes each letter under Solid (3D) shapes or Flat (2D) shapes. Name the solid asks for the 6 names, with a word bank. Faces, edges and vertices are not counted.
Which shapes are on the sheets?
First 6 is circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval and hexagon. 10 shapes adds semicircle, rhombus, trapezoid and pentagon, and All 12 adds parallelogram and octagon. The British trapezium is printed as trapezoid. There is no star or heart, and the tool cannot yet make a sheet about one shape alone.
Which grades do these two dimensional shapes worksheets fit?
Kindergarten to grade 2 in most programs. The Common Core asks kindergartners to name shapes whatever their orientation or size and to tell flat from solid. First graders separate defining attributes such as 3 sides from non-defining ones such as color. Second graders identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes. Your state may word this differently.
