Black, orange and purple crayons go first

Orange, black and at times purple are the traditional Halloween colors. The easy Cauldron has 78 black squares and the easy Black cat 73, so check the black crayons before printing a class set.

Seven of the 8 easy grids need only 3 colors. The Cauldron needs 5, and 8 on its detailed grid, the most on this page.

The Ghost is the part you leave white

White crayon does not show on white paper, so the Ghost works backwards. Pupils color the purple night sky, 72 squares on the easy grid, and the ghost is the shape left blank.

The Candy corn sits inside a black outline so its white tip still reads. Say so first, or somebody will fill the ghost in.

  • Give the Spider to whoever starts last: 60 squares on the easy grid, the quickest picture here.
  • Untick Picture name on the sheet in More options and pupils must guess: the Jack-o'-lantern's grin appears only with the black 3s.
  • Every detailed grid needs a crayon beyond the basic 8: gray, pink, light blue or light green.

Questions and answers

Is this Halloween color by number printable free for a whole class?

Yes. Print or photocopy as many sheets as the class needs. Each is one portrait page of Letter or A4. The colored answer key follows on page 2 unless you untick Answer key on page 2 under More options.

Which Halloween picture takes longest?

The Cauldron, at both sizes: 116 squares on the easy grid and 422 on the detailed one. The detailed Jack-o'-lantern is next at 360, with thin brown ribs. The shortest large grid is the detailed Spider, 199 squares.

Is anything here too scary for young children?

The set is mild: no blood, skeleton or weapon, and no character from a film or a game. If your school does not mark Halloween, the Bat, Spider and Black cat pass as plain animal pictures, with more on the animal page.

How this list was compiled: Our own pixel pictures, drawn square by square for this site on 12 by 12 and 24 by 24 grids. Nothing is traced, scanned or copied from clip art, and no picture shows a character from a film, show, book or game. The color and square counts in each description were counted from the finished grids. The facts about jack-o'-lanterns, candy corn and black cats were checked against Wikipedia in September 2026 and are told in our own words. Licence: own work
