For a graduation party table
Press New puzzle between prints so that no two guests share a grid. Type the graduate's first name or the school mascot at the end of the word list and the grid hides those too. Only the letters A to Z go in, so leave the class year off.
For the last weeks of class
School Memories has 24 words for a fifth or eighth grade send-off, from Homeroom to Farewell. Degrees and Honors has 28 for high school seniors, among them Transcript, Salutatorian and Valedictorian. Both lists sit under the puzzle, in Start from a list. The clues carry word history. Tick Show clues, not words to put it on the sheet: Graduate and Degree both go back to the Latin gradus, a step.
- Mortarboard, the square cap, is named after the flat board a bricklayer uses to hold mortar.
- In the United States the tassel moves from the right side to the left near the end of the ceremony.
- March is the walking music. Edward Elgar wrote one in 1901, and Yale first played it at a graduation in 1905.
Questions and answers
Are Valedictorian and Salutatorian in the puzzle?
Yes, in Degrees and Honors. In the United States the valedictorian usually has the highest marks and gives the farewell talk, and the salutatorian, second in the class, gives the welcome. Congrats stands in for Congratulations, whose 15 letters are too many for these lists.
Does the graduate's name leave my device?
No. The grid is made in your browser, and the words you type are not sent to us.
Which grades does this graduation puzzle suit?
A kindergarten class can do Short and Easy, 12 words of 3 to 5 letters. Grades 5 and 8 fit School Memories or The Ceremony on Easy. High school seniors get real work from Long and Tricky on Hard, where words also run backwards.
