Austria Capital Vienna. In the EU since 1995, the year Finland and Sweden also joined.
Belgium A founding member. Most of the EU's main institutions work in its capital.
Bulgaria Capital Sofia. It joined in 2007 and began using the euro in 2026.
Croatia Capital Zagreb. The newest member, in the EU since 2013.
Cyprus An island country in the Mediterranean Sea, capital Nicosia. It joined in 2004.
Czechia Capital Prague. One of ten countries that joined together in 2004.
Denmark Capital Copenhagen. A member since 1973 that has kept its own money by an agreed exception.
Estonia Capital Tallinn. It joined in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2011.
Finland Capital Helsinki. In the EU since 1995.

Agency An office set up for one special task. The EU has over 30 decentralised ones spread across its countries.
Auditors Officials who check accounts. The EU's court of them checks that its money is raised and spent by the rules.
Brussels The Belgian city where the Commission, the Council and the Parliament all have a home.
Central Bank The institution in Frankfurt that works to keep prices stable where the euro is used.
Commission The EU's main executive body. It proposes new laws and makes sure countries apply them correctly.
Council Where ministers from each national government meet to adopt laws and line up their policies.
Court of Justice The institution that makes sure EU law is followed and is read the same way in every country.
Diplomat A person who represents a government abroad. The EU has its own service of them, with offices around the world.
Election A vote to choose representatives. European ones are held every five years.
Eurozone The countries that have swapped their own money for the shared one: 21 of the 27 in 2026.
Frankfurt The German city that is home to the European Central Bank.
Law A rule that everyone must follow. In principle the Commission proposes each new EU one.
Member State A country that belongs to the EU. There are 27.
Minister A member of a national government in charge of one area, such as farming or finance.
Ombudsman An independent office that holds EU institutions to account and promotes good administration.
Parliament The body that EU citizens elect directly. It decides on laws together with the Council and approves the budget.
President The person who chairs. The European Council's is elected for two and a half years.
Strasbourg The French city where the Parliament's forerunner first met, on 19 March 1958.
Summit A meeting of leaders. The European Council began as an informal one in the 1970s.

Accession The act of joining the EU.
Amsterdam The Dutch capital, which gave its name to a treaty signed on 2 October 1997.
Assembly A body of representatives. The Parliament's forerunner used this word in its name when it first met in 1958.
Brexit The short name for the United Kingdom leaving the EU, which it did on 31 January 2020.
Candidate A country that has applied and is on the official path to joining.
Coal A fuel dug from the ground. Six countries agreed in 1951 to run this industry and steel together.
Cold War The long standoff that divided the continent for more than 40 years after 1945.
Community A word in the names of the EU's forerunners, such as the European Economic one created in 1957.
Declaration A formal public statement. The one of 9 May 1950 proposed joining Western Europe's coal and steel industries.
Enlargement The word for the EU growing as countries join. The biggest came in 2004, with ten at once.
Founder One of the six that began it: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Integration Countries joining their rules and markets more and more closely over time.
Lisbon The city that gave its name to the treaty that 27 countries signed on 13 December 2007.
Maastricht The Dutch city where the Treaty on European Union was signed on 7 February 1992.
Nice The French city that gave its name to a treaty signed on 26 February 2001.
Peace Prize The Nobel award that the EU received in Oslo on 10 December 2012.
Referendum A vote in which all voters answer one question. The United Kingdom held one in June 2016 on leaving the EU.
Rome The city where six countries signed the two treaties of 25 March 1957.
Schengen The village in Luxembourg that gave its name to the agreement on travel without passport checks.
Steel A strong metal made from iron. In 1951 six countries put its making under shared management.
Treaty A written agreement between countries. The powers of EU institutions are set out in several.

Banknote A piece of paper money. The EU's look the same in every country and carry its flag.
Budget A plan for collecting and spending money. The EU's long-term one runs from 2021 to 2027.
Cent The smaller unit of the shared money; 100 make one whole.
Coin A piece of metal money. Each one has a side that is the same everywhere and a side with a national emblem.
Currency The money of one country or of a group of countries.
Customs Checks and charges on goods at a border. A union that removed them among members was the EU's cornerstone.
Economy All the making, selling and buying in a place. The EU's is one of the world's biggest.
Euro The shared money of 21 EU countries, launched on 1 January 1999.
Exchange Swapping one country's money for another's. Travelers between euro countries avoid its cost.
Export To sell goods to another country. The EU is the world's largest seller abroad of manufactured goods and services.
Four Freedoms People, goods, services and money moving freely across the single market.
Goods Things that are made to be sold. Their free movement is one of the four freedoms.
Import To buy goods from another country.
Opt-out An agreed exception to a shared rule. Denmark has one that lets it keep its own money.
Services Work done for customers, such as banking or teaching. They make up most of the EU's economy.
Single Market The area in which goods, services, money and people move freely, launched on 1 January 1993.
Tariff A tax charged on goods brought in from another country.
Trade Buying and selling between countries. Most EU countries send over half the goods they sell abroad to other members.

Anthem A song for a country or a union. The EU's is a tune from an 1823 symphony, played without words.
Blue The color of the background behind the stars.
Border A line between countries. People cross most of those inside the EU without checks.
Charter A document that sets out rights. The EU's gives citizens the right to write to its institutions in any official language.
Circle The round shape that the stars form, a symbol of unity.
Citizen A person who belongs to a country. Anyone who is one of an EU country is one of the Union too.
Democracy Government by the people, through voting.
Diversity Variety. It is the last word of the EU's three-word saying, chosen from 80,000 entries.
Europe Day The EU's yearly celebration on 9 May, the date of a 1950 plan for cooperation.
Flag Twelve gold stars in a ring on a blue field.
Gold The color of the stars.
Harmony Getting along well together; one of the ideals the stars stand for.
Interpreter A person who turns speech into another tongue as it is spoken, as in the Parliament's debates.
Languages The EU has 24 official ones, from Bulgarian to Swedish.
Motto A short saying that sums up what a group stands for. The EU's, first used in 2000, is "United in diversity".
Ode to Joy The poem of 1785 whose musical setting gave the EU its official tune in 1985.
Passport A travel document. Between most EU countries it is not checked at the border.
Peace A time without war. Securing a lasting one was the aim of the first Community in 1951.
Solidarity Standing by one another. It is one of three ideals the stars stand for, with unity and harmony.
Translator A person who turns written words into another tongue. EU laws are published in all 24 official ones.
Travel To go from place to place. Every EU citizen may do it, and live and work, in any EU country.
Twelve Stars What the EU's emblem shows in a ring. The number has nothing to do with how many countries belong.
Union A joining of separate parts into one. The European one was officially created on 1 November 1993.

Each country's clue is its capital and its joining year

"The smallest EU country in both people and area. Capital Valletta. It joined in 2004." is Malta; "Capital Tallinn. It joined in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2011." is Estonia. The years are the ones the EU's own site gives. A count that changes, such as how many countries use the euro, is tied to its year.

How many countries are in the European Union?

27. Six founded it in the 1950s, and the newest member, Croatia, joined in 2013. The United Kingdom left on 31 January 2020. All 27 names are in the EU Member States list.

Which countries use the euro?

In 2026, 21 of the 27: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. Czechia, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden use their own money.

What do the 12 stars on the EU flag mean?

They stand for the unity, solidarity and harmony of Europe's peoples. The number has nothing to do with how many countries belong, and the circle is a symbol of unity.
