Questions and answers
Is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable?
To a botanist it is a fruit: a kind of berry called a pepo, which grows from one of the plant's female flowers. Fruit and Pepo are both in Parts of a Pumpkin Plant.
Why do we carve pumpkins at Halloween?
The custom grew from an old practice in Ireland and Scotland of carving lanterns from turnips. Immigrants to North America took up the native pumpkin, which is much larger and easier to carve.
Which state grows the most pumpkins?
Illinois. It produced about 533 million pounds in 2025, slightly more than the next four states together, and most of its crop goes to canning. California, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania followed.
How heavy is the biggest pumpkin ever grown?
More than 3,000 pounds: as of 2026 the largest ever weighed was 3,156 pounds. A pumpkin of 2,749 pounds set the record at a California festival in October 2023, and such records are broken again and again.
