4 times table facts

4 times table up to × 12.

How it works

This four times table chart runs from 4 × 1 = 4 to 4 × 12 = 48, and Go up to × 20 carries it to 4 × 20 = 80. Each fact's route is in the list All 20 facts, further down.

Double, then double again

4 is 2 × 2, so any 4s fact is a 2s fact doubled. For 4 × 7, double 7 to 14, then double 14 to 28. A pupil who knows the doubles has the whole 4 times table chart in two steps a line.

Quiz it Mixed up

In order, each answer is the one above plus 4, so the column can be filled by counting. Set Order of the facts to Mixed up under More options before New quiz, and every answer has to be doubled out.

  • Stuck on 4 × 12? Double 12 twice: 24, then 48.
  • A 4 times tables chart halves into the 2s: 4 × 9 = 36, so 2 × 9 = 18.

Questions and answers

How do I know if a number is in the 4 times table?

Look at its last two digits only. If they make a multiple of 4, so does the whole number: 1,368 ends in 68, which is 4 × 17, so 1,368 is in the 4s. It works because 100 is 4 × 25.

What are the answers on a 4 times table chart?

To 4 × 12 they are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44 and 48. Choose × 20 under Go up to for 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76 and 80. Every one is even.

Which 4s facts take the longest?

4 × 7, 4 × 8 and 4 × 12, which sit in their own group on this chart. Each is two doubles of a number past 6: 14 and 28, 16 and 32, 24 and 48.

All 20 facts

Know these first: × 1, × 2, × 5, × 10 4

  • 4 × 1 = 4 One group of 4. A square has 4 sides, and a year has 4 seasons.
  • 4 × 2 = 8 Double 4. Two dogs stand on 8 legs between them.
  • 4 × 5 = 20 Half of 4 × 10 = 40. Five cars roll on 20 wheels.
  • 4 × 10 = 40 Write 4, then a 0. A dime is worth 10 cents, so 4 dimes are worth 40 cents.

One step from a fact you know 5

  • 4 × 3 = 12 Double 3 is 6, and double 6 is 12. Three chairs with 4 legs each stand on 12 legs.
  • 4 × 4 = 16 Double 4 is 8, and double 8 is 16. A square number: a 4 by 4 grid holds 16 small squares.
  • 4 × 6 = 24 Double 6 is 12, and double 12 is 24. Or 4 × 5 = 20 and one more 4. A day splits into 4 blocks of 6 hours.
  • 4 × 9 = 36 One 4 less than 4 × 10 = 40: 40 − 4 = 36. Or double 9 is 18, and double 18 is 36.
  • 4 × 11 = 44 4 × 10 = 40 and 4 more. On a 12 by 12 chart, 44 shows up only where the 4s and the 11s cross.

Two steps: 4 × 7, 4 × 8, 4 × 12 3

  • 4 × 7 = 28 Double 7 is 14, and double 14 is 28. Or 4 × 5 = 20 and 4 × 2 = 8, and 20 + 8 = 28. Four weeks of 7 days make 28 days.
  • 4 × 8 = 32 Double 8 is 16, and double 16 is 32. A gallon holds 4 quarts, so 8 gallons hold 32 quarts.
  • 4 × 12 = 48 Double 12 is 24, and double 24 is 48. Four dozen eggs are 48 eggs.

Past the chart: 4 × 13 to 4 × 20 8

  • 4 × 13 = 52 Double 13 is 26, and double 26 is 52. A standard deck has 4 suits of 13 cards, 52 in all.
  • 4 × 14 = 56 Double 14 is 28, and double 28 is 56. It is also 7 × 8, the fact on the 7 and 8 charts.
  • 4 × 15 = 60 4 × 10 = 40 and 4 × 5 = 20, and 40 + 20 = 60. A rugby union team has 15 players, so 4 teams make 60 players.
  • 4 × 16 = 64 Double 16 is 32, and double 32 is 64. 64 is 4 × 4 × 4: stack 4 layers of the 4 by 4 grid and you have a cube.
  • 4 × 17 = 68 4 × 10 = 40 and 4 × 7 = 28, and 40 + 28 = 68. Any number that ends in 68, such as 1,368, is in the 4s too.
  • 4 × 18 = 72 Double 18 is 36, and double 36 is 72. An eighteen-wheeler is named for its 18 wheels, so 4 of them roll on 72.
  • 4 × 19 = 76 One 4 short of 4 × 20 = 80, so 80 − 4 = 76. The year 1976 ends in 76, so it was a multiple of 4: 4 × 494.
  • 4 × 20 = 80 4 × 2 = 8, then write a 0. Four 20-dollar bills make 80 dollars.

How this list was compiled: Own work: each of the 20 facts, and every sum in the notes, was worked out by multiplication and again by doubling twice, and the two answers agreed. The real-world notes were checked against Wikipedia on 2026-09-23, among them the 4 quarts in a gallon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallon), the 4 suits of 13 cards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_52-card_deck) and the last-two-digits test for 4 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divisibility_rule).
