The digits add up to 3, 6 or 9
Add the digits of any answer from 3 × 1 to 3 × 12. 12 gives 1 + 2 = 3, 15 gives 1 + 5 = 6, and 27 gives 2 + 7 = 9. Down the chart the totals go 3, 6, 9, four times over. Past 3 × 12 a total can reach 12, as 39 does. Add again: 1 + 2 = 3.
Test before you press Check
Press New quiz and the chart hides 6 answers. Type yours, then run the digit test before you press Check: a total that is not 3, 6 or 9 means a slip.
- No fact to lean on? Double the number, then add it once more: for 3 × 8, 16 + 8 = 24.
- A multiplication chart by 3 finds thirds as well. One third of 27 is 9, because 3 × 9 = 27.
- Double a 3s answer for the 6s, triple for the 9s: 3 × 4 = 12, 6 × 4 = 24, 9 × 4 = 36.
Questions and answers
What are the answers on a multiplication chart for 3?
Up to 3 × 12 they are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36. Set Go up to at × 20 and the chart adds 39, 42, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57 and 60.
Why do the digits add up to 3, 6 or 9?
Each step adds 3. Usually the last digit rises by 3, and so does the total. Across a ten, the tens digit gains 1 and the ones lose 7, so the total falls by 6. Up 3 or down 6, it stays in the 3s.
Does the digit test work for bigger numbers?
Yes, for a whole number of any size. If the total has two digits, add those as well. 87 gives 8 + 7 = 15, then 1 + 5 = 6, so it is in the 3s: 3 × 29 = 87.
