Jumps of 4 from 0 to 100

Skip counting by 4: 1 to 100. 3 blanks to fill in, in the counting strip.

How it works

This skip counting by 4 chart lights every second even number, 25 stops from 4 to 100. Odd chart rows hold 2 lit squares and even rows hold 3. Each jump carries a short note in the list further down.

The five endings

The ones digits run 4, 8, 2, 6, 0. Every 5 jumps add 20, so the set comes round again at 24, 44, 64 and 84. The tens digit tells you which endings to expect: an even tens digit goes with 0, 4 or 8, and an odd one with 2 or 6. So 20, 24 and 28 are all stops, while the 30s hold only 32 and 36.

Jumps and the strip

Below the 4 skip counting chart, the list All 25 jumps gives each jump, such as 36 + 4 = 40, its note. In the strip, 3 or 4 of the 7 boxes wait for a number: fill them and press Check.

  • Count by 2 as a class and clap on every second number: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.
  • From a stop ending in 8, go 2 up to the ten, then 2 more: 48, 50, 52.
  • For a long number, look at its last two digits: 516 is a stop because 16 is. 526 is not.

Questions and answers

What are the numbers when skip counting by 4s?

Skip counting 4 at a time gives 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40 and on in the same way to 100. A chart that ends at 100 holds all 25 stops, and the 1 to 50 chart holds the first 12.

Why does skip counting by fours land on every second even number?

A jump of 4 is two jumps of 2, so the count lands on every second stop of the 2s: 4, 8, 12, with 2, 6 and 10 passed over. Skip counting by 4's (or 4s, the spelling changes nothing) never touches an odd number.

How do I print skip counting by 4 worksheets?

Print 6 counting strips, under the strip, gives six strips of the 4s and a key. Print the chart prints the chart, with empty squares on Blank or Partly blank. Rows of the 4s: Count by 4s to 48 on skip counting worksheets.

All 25 jumps

4 to 20: the endings run 4, 8, 2, 6, 0 5

  • 0 + 4 = 4 A dog stands on 4 legs, a square has 4 sides and most cars run on 4 wheels.
  • 4 + 4 = 8 The legs on 2 dogs. A gallon holds 4 quarts, which is 8 pints.
  • 8 + 4 = 12 The first jump across a ten: from 8, go 2 up to 10 and 2 more.
  • 12 + 4 = 16 4 fours: a square of 4 rows of 4 has 16 small squares. After an ending of 6 always comes an ending of 0.
  • 16 + 4 = 20 The wheels on 5 cars, and the end of the first set of endings: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.

24 to 40: the same endings, 20 higher 5

  • 20 + 4 = 24 The endings start again, 20 higher, so 24 sits two rows under 4 on the chart.
  • 24 + 4 = 28 The days in 4 weeks, and the last stop in row 3.
  • 28 + 4 = 32 It opens row 4 of the chart, which holds 3 stops: 32, 36 and 40.
  • 32 + 4 = 36 The tens digit 3 is odd, so the 30s hold only two stops: 32 and 36.
  • 36 + 4 = 40 4 tens, so 40 cents is 4 dimes. It sits in column 10, like 20 before it.

44 to 60: the middle of the chart 5

  • 40 + 4 = 44 4 elevens. The third set of endings starts here, two rows under 24.
  • 44 + 4 = 48 4 dozen. A 4 times table that runs to 12 ends on this stop.
  • 48 + 4 = 52 A deck of cards has 4 suits of 13, which is 52 cards.
  • 52 + 4 = 56 Row 6, column 6. Only three stops sit where the row and column numbers match: 12, 56 and 100.
  • 56 + 4 = 60 The end of the third set of endings: 15 jumps done, 10 to go.

64 to 80: the 60s hold 3 stops, the 70s only 2 5

  • 60 + 4 = 64 16 fours, and 16 was 4 fours, so 64 is 4 × 4 × 4.
  • 64 + 4 = 68 The 60s hold three stops, 60, 64 and 68, because their tens digit is even.
  • 68 + 4 = 72 8 nines or 9 eights, and 18 fours.
  • 72 + 4 = 76 It ends in 6 like 16, 36 and 56 before it, so the next stop ends in 0.
  • 76 + 4 = 80 4 twenties. The fourth set of endings stops here.

84 to 100: the last set, ending on the last square 5

  • 80 + 4 = 84 The last set of endings on the chart starts here, in column 4 under 4, 24, 44 and 64.
  • 84 + 4 = 88 4 × 22 and 8 × 11. The last jump across a ten comes next: go 2 up to 90 and 2 more.
  • 88 + 4 = 92 The 90s hold only two stops, 92 and 96, because their tens digit is odd.
  • 92 + 4 = 96 24 fours, so it is the hours in 4 days.
  • 96 + 4 = 100 The last square of the chart. 4 quarters of 25 cents make 100 cents, which is 1 dollar.

How this list was compiled: Own work. The count was worked out twice (4 times the jump number, then repeated addition of 4), and the same check checked every ending, every row and column on a chart 10 squares wide, and every list of other counts from 3 to 12 that land on a stop.
