How it works

Press Make a new sheet for a 4s multiplication worksheet and its answer key. The first one mixes up 4 × 1 to 4 × 12 over 40 lines. Sheet type turns the 4s into quarters, square perimeters and doubled 2s.

Why the 4s are taught through doubling

4 is 2 × 2, so multiplying by 4 is doubling twice: 7, 14, 28. England's curriculum places the 4s in Year 3 and has pupils connect the 2, 4 and 8 tables through doubling. After the 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 tables, 7 facts are new: 4 times 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12.

A 4 times tables worksheet for each day

Monday: 4 times table in order. Tuesday: Double the 2s fact. Wednesday: 4 times table shuffled. Thursday: Missing factor: 4 × __ = 28, then Divide by 4. Friday: Dollars and quarters or Square perimeters, where 4 × 7 is 28 quarters or 28 cm round a square. Stopping at 10 × 10? The 4's multiplication worksheet to print is 4 times table up to 4 × 10.

  • Pupils say the doubles aloud before writing: double 7 is 14, double 14 is 28. It slows the guessing.
  • 28, 32 and 44 are on a 12 × 12 chart only as 4 × 7, 4 × 8 and 4 × 11.
  • Ones digits repeat 4, 8, 2, 6, 0. An odd answer is wrong at a glance.

Questions and answers

What is the easiest way to learn the 4 times table?

Double the number, then double the answer. For 4 × 6, double 6 to get 12 and double 12 to get 24. It works because 4 is 2 × 2. The sheet Double the 2s fact: 4 × 7 = 2 × (2 × 7) sets this out line by line.

How can pupils tell if a number is in the 4 times table?

If the last two digits make a number that divides by 4, the whole number does: 132 is in, because 32 is 4 × 8. Or halve twice: 96 goes to 48, then 24. 54 halves to 27, so it is out.

What comes after the 4 times table?

The 8s: every 8s fact is a 4s answer doubled, so 4 × 7 = 28 gives 8 × 7 = 56. England teaches the 3, 4 and 8 tables in the same year. 2s, 4s and 8s mixed puts the doubling tables on one sheet.

All 16 sheet types

The 4 times table 4

  • 4 times table in order The 13 facts from 4 × 0 up to 4 × 12 in order with the 4 written first, so the answers climb by 4 from 0 to 48. After the run, 12 of the same facts return in shuffled order to make 25 lines. A first sheet for the week the table is new; 13 problems prints the run by itself.
  • 4 times table shuffled 40 problems from 4 × 1 to 4 × 12 in mixed order, with the 4 first in some and second in others. Each of the 12 facts comes up 3 times, and 4 of them a fourth time. The page opens on this sheet.
  • 4 times table up to 4 × 10 The shuffled sheet stopped at 4 × 10 = 40, for classes whose list of facts ends at 10 × 10. 40 problems, so each of the 10 facts comes up 4 times, with the 4 first in some and second in others.
  • One-minute drill on the 4s 30 shuffled facts under the line Set a timer for 1 minute and see how far you get, with a score out of 30 at the top. Print a new one each day and let pupils chart their own score, so they race yesterday's number and not each other.

Doubling sheets 1

  • Double the 2s fact: 4 × 7 = 2 × (2 × 7) Each line writes the 4 as 2 × 2 and moves the brackets: 4 × 7 = (2 × 2) × 7 = 2 × (2 × 7) = 2 × 14 = 28. Pupils fill four blanks a line, so they see that a 4s fact is a 2s fact doubled. Factors run from 2 to 12.

Quarters, dollars and squares 3

  • Dollars and quarters: 7 dollars = __ quarters A United States quarter is 25 cents, so 4 of them make a dollar and the 4 times table counts them. Some lines turn dollars into quarters, 7 dollars = __ quarters, and the rest go back: 28 quarters = __ dollars. 20 lines from 2 to 12 dollars, or 12 for a shorter sheet.
  • One quarter of 28: divide by 4 in words Finding a quarter is dividing by 4, so each line is a 4s fact told as a sentence: One quarter of 28 is __. 12 lines, one for every answer in the table from 4 to 48. Pupils can check by halving twice: 28, 14, 7.
  • Square perimeters: sides of 7 cm A square has 4 equal sides, so its perimeter is 4 times one side. Some lines give the side and ask for the perimeter. Others give a perimeter such as 28 cm and ask for the side. The key prints the 4s fact under each answer. Sides run from 2 cm to 12 cm.

Missing numbers and division 3

  • Divide by 4 40 division facts from 4 ÷ 4 up to 48 ÷ 4, shuffled. Each one is a 4 times table fact read backwards: 32 ÷ 4 = 8 because 8 × 4 = 32. Halving twice works too: 32, 16, 8.
  • Missing factor: 4 × __ = 28 The product is printed and the other factor is blank: 4 × __ = 28, then 4 × __ = 36. The 4 always shows, so the pupil is asking how many 4s make 28, which is division before the ÷ sign appears. 12 lines, one for each fact from 4 × 1 to 4 × 12.
  • Missing number anywhere The blank moves from line to line: 4 × 9 = __, 4 × __ = 36, __ × 9 = 36. Pupils have to read the whole line before they answer, so nobody fills a column without thinking.

Mixed with other tables 3

  • 2s and 4s mixed The 2 and 4 times tables shuffled together, 40 problems. The two tables share the answers 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24, so 16 turns up both as 2 × 8 and as 4 × 4.
  • 2s, 4s and 8s mixed All three doubling tables on one sheet. 16 can be 2 × 8, 4 × 4 or 8 × 2, and 24 can be 2 × 12, 4 × 6 or 8 × 3, so pupils meet the same answers from three directions.
  • 3s and 4s mixed England teaches the 3, 4 and 8 tables in the same year, so this pair is a common review. Watch 12, 24 and 36, which sit in both tables: 3 × 4, 3 × 8 and 3 × 12, or 4 × 3, 4 × 6 and 4 × 9.

Past 4 × 12 2

  • 4 × 13 to 4 × 25 by doubling twice The table carried past 12 the way the 4s do it, by doubling twice: 4 × 23 = (2 × 2) × 23 = 2 × (2 × 23) = 2 × 46 = 92. Pupils fill four blanks a line, and the sheet opens on 10 lines. The run ends at 4 × 25 = 100, the four quarters in a dollar.
  • 4 × tens: 4 × 30 = 120 4 × 10 up to 4 × 90. Pupils use the fact they know and move it one place: 4 × 3 = 12, so 4 × 30 = 120. A bridge from the table to 2-digit multiplication.

How this list was compiled: Sheet types, wording and worked examples are own work, and the tool works out every answer. The Year 3 placing of the 4 times table and the doubling link between the 2, 4 and 8 tables come from the national curriculum in England, mathematics programmes of study (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-curriculum-in-england-mathematics-programmes-of-study/national-curriculum-in-england-mathematics-programmes-of-study), checked 2026-09-20. The same document defines a quarter as 1 of 4 equal parts (Year 1), has Year 3 measure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapes and has Year 4 calculate the perimeter of rectilinear figures, squares included.
