How it works
This verb word search hides 16 of 24 mixed verbs, such as Gallop, Tiptoe and Become, in a 15 by 15 grid. A line under it asks for one sentence using three. Nine more lists sort 190 verbs by job.

Pick the verbs you are teaching
Under the puzzle, Start from a list has ten lists. Action Verbs holds 27 words for the youngest, such as Hop, Wiggle and Gallop. Three lists replace tired words in pupils' writing: Verbs to Use for Said (Mutter, Bellow), for Went (Trudge, Saunter) and for Looked (Squint, Scrutinize). For naming words, print noun flashcards.
Turn irregular past tense into a quiz
Pick Irregular Past Tense and tick Show clues, not words. The sheet prints "Past tense of go: Today I go. Yesterday I ___." and the grid hides Went. The harder list runs from Brought and Caught to Understood and Overslept.
- Grades 1 and 2: pick Short Verbs (53 verbs, such as Hop), then Large print under More options.
- Grade 5 and up: pick Long Verbs and press Hard.
- Run Helping and Linking Verbs as a verb word search puzzle with clues: "You ___ wear a coat" hides Should.
Questions and answers
Is every word on the list a verb?
Yes. All 190 entries were looked up in the American Heritage Dictionary in September 2026: each base form carries a verb label, and each irregular form is entered as the past tense of its verb. March and Dash are nouns too, a good talking point.
Why are Am, Is, Be and Do missing from the helping verbs?
A hidden word needs three letters, so the four shortest helpers cannot go in the grid. The list keeps 19 helpers: ten forms of be, have and do, and nine modal verbs, such as Might. Nine linking verbs follow, such as Seem and Taste.
Why are Rang, Swore and Read missing from the past tense lists?
Ran reads inside Rang and Wore inside Swore, and one list may not hold a word inside another, so the longer word is left out. Read, Put and Cut spell their past tense like the present, so the clue would give the answer away.
