How it works
This time word search opens as a clue puzzle: 12 clues from Telling Time, such as "3:30 is ___ three", beside a 15 by 15 grid that hides each answer, HALFPAST. The 12 lists hold 188 words, from Parts of the Day to Calendar Words.

Read the time, then find the words
The opening list, Telling Time, puts digit times in its clues: "3:15 is ___ three" hides Quarter past and "2:45 is ___ three" hides Quarter to. Under the puzzle, Start from a list has the list Times in Words: 38 whole times, where "2:45 in words (quarter to): ___" hides QUARTERTOTHREE.
Print it with the answer key
Print or save as PDF lays out 2 pages on Letter or A4: the clues and the grid with a Name and Date line, then the answer key. For a plain vocabulary puzzle, untick Show clues, not words. Monday to Sunday and January to December are on the ESL word search, in its Days and Months list.
- Grades 1 and 2: pick Easy Time Words, 49 words such as Noon and Week, and Large print.
- Keep Times in Words at 12 clues: its entries run 9 to 14 letters, and 16 can crowd a 15 by 15 grid.
- Hourglass is in Clocks and Timers: run the sand timer on the board so pupils watch 3 minutes of sand fall as they hunt.
Questions and answers
Which time words are on the list?
Telling time (O'clock, Half past, Quarter to), clocks and timers, parts of the day, units from Second to Millennium, calendar words, order words such as Before and After, and schedule words such as Elapsed. Day and month names are left out.
What do a.m. and p.m. stand for?
Ante meridiem and post meridiem, Latin for before noon and after noon. Both are in Schedules and Timing, and each is hidden as one run of 12 letters, ANTEMERIDIEM, so keep that list on a grid of 12 by 12 or larger.
Why is quarter past three missing from Times in Words?
An entry holds 14 letters at most, and QUARTERPASTTHREE has 16. Ten of the 48 times from 1:00 to 12:45 are left out for that reason: eight Quarter past times, Quarter to eleven and Quarter to twelve. Every o'clock and Half past time fits.
Where do the meanings come from?
Every word was looked up in the American Heritage Dictionary in September 2026, and number clues, such as 14 days for Fortnight, follow its entries. Each of the 38 spelled-out times was read back against its digits.
