Person, place, thing or idea

Start from a list offers People (16), Animals (18), Places (21) and Things (20): nouns you can see and touch. Ideas You Cannot Touch holds 21 abstract nouns, such as Courage, Freedom and Curiosity, for the lesson where a noun names something no one can hold.

Collective nouns, plurals and compounds

Collective Nouns has 20 group words, from Flock and Herd to Gaggle and Pod. Irregular Plurals has 18: tick Show clues, not words, and the sheet prints More than one goose for Geese. Compound Nouns has 25, such as Sunflower and Thunderstorm.

  • Grades 1 and 2: pick Short Nouns, 35 nouns of three to five letters, then Large print under More options.
  • School sits in Places, yet a school of fish is a collective noun: a good talking point.

Questions and answers

Is every word on the list a noun?

Yes. All 157 entries were looked up in the American Heritage Dictionary in September 2026, and each is entered there as a noun. Words that are mainly verbs, such as Run and Jump, are left to the verb word search.

Why are Men and Elves missing from the irregular plurals?

Men reads inside Women and Elves inside Shelves, and a grid must not hold one answer inside another. Women and Shelves stay, with Mice, Geese, Teeth, Children and twelve more.

Are there proper nouns in the puzzle?

No. All eight lists hold common nouns: no names of people, cities, days or months.

How do I use it in a parts of speech unit?

Print this sheet for nouns, then the verb and adjective word searches for the next two lessons. The line under this puzzle asks for one sentence that uses three nouns, each one circled.
