Things That Go Backwards 32

Astern A sailor's word for behind the ship, or moving backwards.
Backflip A jump in which your whole body turns one full circle backwards.
Backpedal To turn bike pedals backwards, or to take back what you said.
Backspace The keyboard key that erases the letter to the left of the cursor.
Backstroke The only racing swim style done face up, so swimmers cannot see where they are going.
Backtrack To go back the way you came.
Backwash Water that runs back down the beach after a wave breaks.
Boomerang A curved throwing stick. The returning kind flies in a loop and comes back to the thrower.
Comeback A return to winning after falling behind.
Countdown Ten, nine, eight: numbers called in reverse until a spacecraft lifts off.
Crayfish A freshwater cousin of the lobster that flips its tail to shoot backwards out of danger.
Echo A sound that bounces off a canyon wall and comes back to you a moment later.
Flashback A scene in a story that jumps back to an earlier time.
Hindsight Understanding something only after it has happened.
Lobster A sea animal with big claws. It escapes danger by flipping its tail and darting backwards.
Mirror A glass that shows your reflection. Hold a word up to it and the letters look reversed.
Palindrome A word such as noon or level that reads the same both ways. This puzzle cannot hide one.
Pendulum A hanging weight that swings back and forth, as in a tall clock.
Rebound To bounce back, like a basketball off the rim.
Recoil To spring or jerk back suddenly.
Reflect To bounce light or sound back, as a mirror does.
Refund Money given back when you take something back to the store.
Replay To play a game, song or video clip over again.
Retreat To move back, away from danger.
Return To come back, or to give something back.
Reverse The gear that makes a car go backwards.
Rewind To wind a tape or video back toward the start.
Rowboat A small boat moved with oars. In the sport of rowing, the crew faces the back of the boat.
Salmon A fish that swims from the ocean back up the river where it was born to lay its eggs.
Shrimp A small sea animal with a curled tail. One fast flick of that tail shoots it backwards.
Squid A sea animal with eight arms and two tentacles. It jets backwards to escape.
Undo The computer command that takes back your last change.

None is a palindrome and none spells another word backwards, so Stop, Star and Drawer are left out. Spellings are American. Three levels, all of them backwards

Three buttons set the level. Right to left is 10 by 10 with 8 words, all in rows. Plus bottom to top is 13 by 13 with 15 words and adds columns read upward. Plus diagonals is 18 by 18 with 25 words and adds the two diagonals that run leftwards.

Words a backwards puzzle cannot take

Two kinds of word are left out, with the reason under the list. Kayak reads the same both ways. List Drawer with Reward and one goes, because DRAWER backwards reads REWARD. The tool does not know that Stop backwards spells POTS, which a solver may circle, so our 6 lists of 32 words skip such words.

What is a backwards word search?

A word search with every listed word spelled in reverse. Here none runs left to right, top to bottom or along a rightward diagonal, and a grid that lets one read forwards by accident is remade before you see it.

How does a backwards word search print?

Each level fits one Letter or A4 page with a Name and Date line, the rule, the grid and the word list. Squares are 13 mm on the first two levels and 8 mm on the third. The answer key prints on its own page.

Can I make my own backwards word search?
