The easy list is short words: Burrow, Furry, Cloudy, Extra. Medium, the opening sheet, holds Shadow, Forecast, Leap year and Freedom. The hard list reaches Pennsylvania and Meteorologist, at 12 and 13 letters.
For February 2
Print a sheet on Groundhog Day: Shadow, Burrow, Woodchuck and Six more weeks retell the legend. Valentine words have a page of their own and are not repeated here. Each press of New scramble deals the letters again.
- Groundhog and Woodchuck are two names for one animal: ask pupils to find both on the hard sheet.
- Twenty-eight and Leap year pair up: ask how many days February has this year.
Questions and answers
When is Groundhog Day?
February 2. The legend says that if the groundhog sees its shadow, six more weeks of winter follow, and if not, spring comes early. Shadow, Legend and Groundhog are on the list.
Is it Presidents' Day or Washington's Birthday?
In federal law the holiday on the third Monday in February is Washington's Birthday. The National Archives notes that Congress never changed the name to Presidents' Day. President, Birthday and Third Monday are on the list.
What is a leap year?
A year when February has 29 days in place of 28. The extra day keeps the calendar in step with Earth's trip around the sun. Leap year, Extra and Twenty-eight are on the list.
What grades is it for?
The easy list (Furry, Short) suits kindergarten and grade 1 with hints on. Medium suits grades 2 and 3, and the hard list (Woodchuck, Hibernation) suits grade 4 and up. The answer key prints on its own page.
