Spring spelling word practice in three levels

Level 1 is for kindergarten and first grade: short words (seed, mist), blends and vowel teams (sprout, tweet) and two-syllable words (petal, lilac). Level 2, about second to fourth grade, has compound words (birdhouse, anthill), flowers and trees (bluebell, dogwood) and endings, where budding doubles the d. Level 3, fifth grade and up, has science words (equinox, chrysalis), garden words (wheelbarrow, foliage) and describing words (fragrant, vernal). The grades are only our suggestion.

April spelling words and May spelling words

For April, Lists 1 and 4 hold the rain: mist, raindrop, rainfall, rainstorm. For May, List 5 has the flowers (peony, azalea, magnolia) and List 8 the garden.

  • Budding doubles the d of bud; blooming and thawing add ing with no change.
  • Vernal means of the spring; it is in List 9.

Questions and answers

Are there spring spelling words 4th grade students can use?

Level 2 is our suggestion for about grades 2 to 4: compound words such as earthworm, flowers such as daffodil, and endings such as hatching.

Are there spring spelling word printables?

Yes, nine of them, one for each list. Choose Word list for the ten words with their sentences, or Test sheet for numbered blank lines, then press Print.

Is it petal or pedal?

A flower has a petal; a bike has a pedal. List 3 reads One pink petal fell on the table, so pedal and peddle are marked wrong, with a note that they sound the same.

Are Easter words on this list?

No. The list keeps to weather, plants, animals and the garden, so it has no egg, bunny or basket.
