How it works
These spring crossword puzzles, printable on Letter or A4, keep every holiday word in one set, so the other five suit any class. They are vocabulary crosswords that open on short words such as Rain, Lamb and Kite.

Short words first, then five themes
Short Spring Words holds answers of 3 or 4 letters, from Mud and Bud to Foal and Kite. Spring Weather has Puddle, Drizzle and Rainbow. Flowers and Garden has Tulip, Pollen and Compost. Baby Animals, Birds and Bugs has Tadpole, Duckling and Robin. Outdoor Play and Spring Cleaning has Hopscotch, Picnic and Mop.
Dates a class can find on the calendar
Spring Days and Holidays clues carry real dates: Earth Day on April 22, Arbor Day on the last Friday in April, Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. Months are Northern Hemisphere months and the dates follow the United States.
- For first and second graders, stay on Short Spring Words, keep the word bank on and take clues away with their crosses until 6 are left.
- New puzzle draws another grid from the same set. The answer key prints last, and the line that starts "Print gives" has the page count.
- Before a planting unit, untick Word bank under the clues in More options and print Flowers and Garden to see which words the class knows.
Questions and answers
Which holidays are in the clues?
St. Patrick's Day, April Fools' Day, Easter, Passover, Holi, Nowruz, Earth Day, Arbor Day, May Day, Mother's Day and Memorial Day, with Groundhog Day as the lead-in. They sit only in Spring Days and Holidays, and under All, so the other five sets have none.
What grades are the spring clues written for?
Short Spring Words suits about grades 1 and 2, with answers such as Mud, Egg and Nest. The themed sets suit grades 2 to 5. Wheelbarrow and Caterpillar, at 11 letters, are the longest answers. These bands are our judgement, not a published standard.
Do the dates work outside the United States?
Earth Day is April 22 worldwide, but Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Arbor Day and the clock change follow the United States, and the months are those of a northern spring. Classes elsewhere can use the other five sets.
