How this list was compiled: Words chosen and hints written by the Homeroom Tools editor. The grade is our suggestion: the United States has no national curriculum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_curriculum, read 2026-09-20), so no national list sets a grade's spelling words there. England does set statutory word lists, for years 3 to 6 of school (https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a7ccc06ed915d63cc65ce61/English_Appendix_1_-_Spelling.pdf, read 2026-09-20); this list does not follow them. Spellings are American, and every word has an entry page at https://en.wiktionary.org/ (all 200 checked on 2026-09-20). Read there on 2026-09-19, at /wiki/ plus the word: grey as the Commonwealth standard spelling of gray, won't (will not), can't (cannot), the usual pronunciation of Wednesday with no d before the n, and again with a short e. The silent k in kn, the silent w before r, the silent b after m, soft c and soft g before e and i, tch, dge, the w sound at the start of once, and a doubled consonant showing a short vowel were read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_orthography on 2026-09-19. How the second grade spelling worksheets print

The page opens on List 1 (rain, mail, tail and 7 more) as an unscramble sheet at Small (10 mm) with the Name and Date line off: 10 words on 1 page of Letter or A4. Under More options, What goes on the sheet swaps Unscramble for Missing letters, Word shapes, ABC order, tracing, a sentence or Sort by list.

Spelling worksheets for grade 2 from your own list

Type up to 20 words of up to 16 characters in the box and they replace ours. The grade is our suggestion: the United States has no national curriculum, so no national list sets a grade's words. Under the tool every word has a hint for the adult: in paint the n gets left out, so watch for pait.

  • Unscramble prints Monday and I'm in small letters with a loose apostrophe. For Lists 19 and 20 choose Missing letters.
  • Share link puts your typed words into the link itself, so keep student names out of it.
  • Gray is American and grey the Commonwealth spelling. For grey, type List 1 in the box yourself.

Why does hopping have two p's and hoping one?

Hop doubles its p before ing, which keeps the o short. Hope drops its e and keeps one p, so the o stays long. List 17 practices both: running, stopped, clapped and swimming double a letter, and making, riding, smiled and baked drop an e.
