Words with open syllables, list by list

Lists 1 to 3 are words whose first syllable is open: a in a-corn and fla-vor, o in ho-tel and lo-cate, u in hu-mid and fu-ture. List 4 holds words where every syllable is open: si-lo, to-fu, ro-de-o. Open i and open e words are on the long i and long e pages.

From screen to paper

Word list sets each word above its sentence. Test sheet is the same list as blank numbered lines, with a key page for the adult who reads. ABC order and Missing letters are two more ways to practice. Start test reads word, sentence and word again, then marks the whole list.

  • Super, tutor and judo say oo, not yoo, in the open u. Both sounds count as long u.

Questions and answers

What are open syllable words?

Words with a syllable that ends in its vowel, so the vowel is long: ba-sin, ro-dent, hu-mor. Close that syllable with a consonant and the vowel turns short, as in bas-ket.

Is this an open and closed syllables list?

Mostly: in words such as ho-tel and ba-sin the first syllable is open and the second closed. Yoga, cobra and every word in List 4 end open too. Closed-only words are List 1 of the syllable types page.

Where are multisyllabic words with open syllables?

Rodeo, uniform, unicorn and usual have three syllables; the rest have two. The multisyllabic word list adds two more open lists, ro-bot to si-lent, and words of up to six syllables.
