How this list was compiled: Our own selection of one-syllable English words under two headings. An open syllable ends in its vowel and the vowel is long (be, go, hi, and y said as long i in my and fly); a closed syllable has one vowel letter shut in by a consonant, and the vowel is short (bed, got, hit). The first twelve closed words are open words with a consonant added. Every word was checked by script on 2026-10-01 in two places: the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, a record of General American pronunciation (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict), where every listed pronunciation of an open word must end in its one long vowel and every listed pronunciation of a closed word must have one short vowel followed by a consonant sound; and the word's own entry at https://en.wiktionary.org/, where the rhymes key or the pronunciation line must show the same vowel. A word for which either source lists a second vowel sound was left out (me, men, bath and moth among them), and so were the patterns that often break the rule: a vowel before r, w or y, a or o before ll, and i or o before ld, nd, st or lt. To, do and who are left out because the o does not say its name. The two definitions were read on 2026-10-01 at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonics (closed syllables: one vowel letter with a consonant after it, with the short sound; open syllables: a vowel at the end of the syllable, with its long sound) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syllable. Spellings are American. No published word list or reading programme was copied. Licence: own work

How it works

This open closed syllables worksheet prints a box of one-syllable words and two headings to sort them under: open, where the word ends in a long vowel, and closed, where a consonant shuts a short vowel in.

How to tell them apart

Look at the end of the word. Go, she and hi end in their vowel, and the vowel says its name: open. Add a consonant and the door shuts: got, shed, hit. Now the vowel is short and the syllable is closed. In my and fly, y is the vowel and says long i.

Write, or cut and paste

Answer by has Pencil only, with lines under each heading, and Cut and paste, with the words as tiles along the bottom. Things to sort sets 6 to 20 words, half under each heading.

Your own words

Type one heading per line, then a colon and its words: Open syllable: no, we, try. What you type replaces the sample. Both our lists are under the tool to copy from.

  • To, do and who are not in the lists: they end in o, but the o does not say its name.
  • A word can stand under one heading only. Typed under two, it is left off the sheet and named under the box.

Questions and answers

What is an open syllable?

A syllable that ends in its vowel, with nothing after it. The vowel is long, so it says its name: be, go, hi. Words that end in y said as long i, such as my and fly, are sorted as open here too.

What is a closed syllable?

A syllable where one vowel letter has a consonant after it. The consonant shuts the vowel in and the vowel is short: bed, got, hit. It may end in more than one consonant, as in lift and stamp.

Is there a closed syllable worksheet on its own?

Not here: a sort needs two headings. To keep a sheet to closed syllables, type two headings of closed words in the box, such as Short e: bed, hem, wet and Short i: hit, him, lift.

Why are car and cold not in the closed list?

They look closed, but the vowel is not short. An r changes the vowel before it, as in car, and in cold and kind the vowel is long. A sorting sheet needs words that follow the rule.

Does it print an answer key?

Yes. It prints as the last page unless you untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options. The key lists every word under its heading, in the same columns as the sheet.
