How it works
Each sentence on these long and short vowel worksheets has a blank and two words that differ only in the vowel: cap or cape, hop or hope. Children circle the word that fits. Only one makes sense, so they have to read both.

Questions and answers
What is the difference between a long and a short vowel?
A long vowel has the sound of its letter's name: a in cape, i in pine, o in hope. A short vowel is the sound in cap, pin and hop. A silent e or a second vowel letter often marks the long one.
Do the long and short vowel worksheets have answers?
Yes. The answer key prints as the last page, with the right word circled. To print the sentences alone, untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options.
Why is the short u or long u set shorter?
English has few everyday pairs that differ only by a short and a long u, such as cub and cube. The set holds five sentences, and the other sets hold eight.
Can I add my own sentences?
Yes. Type one to a line, with ___ for the blank, an equals sign, the right word, then a slash and the wrong one: The ___ is ripe. = plum / plume. Your lines replace ours.
