How it works
Oo mostly spells two sounds: the long one in moon and the short one in book. The sheet on show sorts words by those sounds. Twenty lists of eight add the same sounds spelled ew, ue, u_e, ou and u.

Sort moon words from book words
A sort takes five words from the list on show and five from each of the next two. Lists 1 to 15 run in threes: a moon list, a book list, then another spelling. Start anywhere from List 1 to List 14, under More options, Word list, and both sounds are on the sheet.
Phonics oo sound worksheets with blanks
Choose Missing letters under What goes on the sheet. Each word prints without its oo: m__n for moon, f__tball for football. On the other lists the blank is ew, ue, ou or u, and in flute both the u and the e.
- Room, roof, root and hoof are on no list: dictionaries give each of them both oo sounds.
- The hints under the tool name sound-alikes: blue and blew, wood and would, threw and through.
Questions and answers
What are the two sounds of oo?
A long sound, as in moon, zoom and balloon, and a short sound, as in book, foot and wood. The spelling is the same, so every list here keeps to one sound and its heading names it.
Which lists make oo worksheets for 1st grade?
The grade is our suggestion, not a school's list. Lists 1 to 4 hold one-syllable words such as moon, book, grew and spoon; kangaroo, football and afternoon come in Lists 7, 8 and 16.
Which other letters spell the oo sounds?
For the sound in moon: ew in grew, ue in blue, u_e in flute and ou in soup. For the sound in book: a single u, as in push and pudding. Each spelling has lists of its own.
Is there an answer key for the oo sort?
Yes. The last page shows every word under its heading. To print without it, open More options and uncheck Add an answer key as the last page.
