It word family words in seven lists

List 1 holds the short words: it, bit, fit, hit, kit, lit, pit, sit, wit. Two or three letters come first on List 2: flit, grit, knit, quit, skit, slit, spit, split. Lists 3 and 4 are longer, such as admit, submit, outfit and moonlit. List 6 is the quiet -it of rabbit; List 7 is fruit, trait and six more with other vowels.

Sitting and visited: when the t doubles

List 5 adds an ending. The American Heritage Dictionary doubles the t in sitting, quitting and admitted, where the word has one syllable or the stress is on -it. The quiet -it of List 6 keeps one t: visited, edited, limited, orbited.

  • Knit begins with a silent k: the dictionary writes it (nĭt), the same sounds as nit.
  • Hit, split and slit do not change in the past: the ball hit the fence yesterday.
  • Lit is a past form of light, and bit of bite: she lit the lamp, the puppy bit the rope.

Questions and answers

Can I print it word family worksheets for kindergarten?

Yes. List 1 has the nine shortest words (it, bit, sit), none longer than three letters, a fair first sheet for kindergarten. Print it as a Word list or a Test sheet, or as an ABC order or Missing letters sheet.

Do rabbit and visit rhyme with sit?

Not fully. The American Heritage Dictionary writes rabbit as (răb-ĭt): the short i is there, but the stress falls on the first syllable. A full rhyme needs the same stressed vowel, so the twelve words like rabbit are on List 6.

Is wait an it word family word?

No. Wait ends in the letters it, but the dictionary writes it (wāt), with long a, like trait on List 7.
