Fractions on a Number Line Worksheets

Pick a line, 0 to 1 or past 1, press Make a new sheet and print it with the key.

6 number lines. Name the point: halves, thirds and fourths. Sheet 9ZO0FE, with its answer key.

How it works

Each fractions on a number line worksheet prints a page of lines with the key on page 2. Name the point, place a given fraction, or give one point two names: an improper fraction and a mixed number.

Placing and identifying fractions

To place 3/5, count 3 of the 5 equal spaces from 0. To identify a point, count the spaces from 0 to the dot. Count spaces, not marks: a line in fifths has 4 marks between 0 and 1. Mark it or name it mixes both jobs on one sheet.

Past 1

The count keeps going: on a line in thirds, 3/3 sits on 1 and the next mark is 4/3. Improper fraction and mixed number at one point asks for 11/8 and 1 3/8 together, and Whole numbers in fifths and halves names 2 as 10/5.

Questions and answers

What grade learns fractions on a number line?

Grade 3 in Common Core states, on halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths, both between 0 and 1 and past 1. Fifths, tenths and twelfths belong to grade 4, which is why this page gives them their own sheets.

Is there an improper fractions on a number line worksheet?

Yes. The lines past 1 run from 0 to 2 or 0 to 3. On a mixed number line worksheet such as Fifths and tenths past 1, each dot gets two names, like 13/10 and 1 3/10.

How do I get a fractions on a number line worksheet PDF?

Press Print, or save as PDF from your browser's print window. The sheet is page 1 and the answer key page 2. Make a new sheet deals new fractions for a second copy.

From 0 to 1 7

  • The first mark after 0: fifths to twelfths A line from 0 to 1 cut into 10 equal spaces: the first mark after 0 is 1/10, the size of one space.
  • Mark it or name it: fifths to twelfths Half the lines give a fraction to mark and half give a dot to name. 5/8 is 5 of the 8 spaces from 0.
  • Name the point: fifths and tenths A line in tenths has a dot 7 spaces from 0: the dot is 7/10. Tenths come back as decimals in grade 4, where 7/10 is 0.7.
  • Name the point: halves, thirds and fourths A line from 0 to 1 cut into 4 equal spaces has a dot 3 spaces from 0: the dot is 3/4. Count the spaces, not the marks.
  • Name the point: sixths, eighths and twelfths With 12 spaces between 0 and 1, a dot 5 spaces along is 5/12. The more spaces, the smaller each one.
  • Place the fraction: fifths and tenths To place 4/5, count 4 of the 5 equal spaces from 0 and draw a dot. The key draws each dot in place.
  • Place the fraction: sixths and twelfths To place 7/12, count 7 of the 12 spaces. 6/12 is the middle of the line, so 7/12 sits one space past it.

Past 1: improper fractions and mixed numbers 5

  • Fifths and tenths past 1, both names The dot 13 tenths from 0 is 13/10, and also 1 3/10. Write both names.
  • Improper fraction and mixed number at one point The dot 11 eighths from 0 is 11/8, and also 1 3/8: one whole of 8/8 and 3 eighths more. Write both names.
  • Name the point from 0 to 2: halves to sixths On a line from 0 to 2 in thirds, 3/3 sits on 1 and the next mark is 4/3. Past 1 the count of thirds keeps going.
  • Name the point from 0 to 3 On a line from 0 to 3 in halves, the dot 5 spaces from 0 is 5/2. 2/2 is 1, 4/2 is 2 and 6/2 is 3.
  • Whole numbers in fifths and halves On a line from 0 to 3 in fifths, the mark on 2 is 10/5. Every whole number on the line has a fraction name.

How this list was compiled: Own list of sheet types, written September 2026. Every worked example was checked with exact fraction arithmetic. That a fraction is a point on the number line, found by marking off equal lengths from 0, and that equivalent fractions sit at the same point, was checked against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraction and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, https://learning.ccsso.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Math_Standards1.pdf (3.NF.2, 3.NF.3a, 3.NF.3c, 4.NF.2), read September 2026.
