How it works
Make whole numbers as fractions worksheets that write a whole number as a fraction, from 3 = 3/1 to 3 = 12/4. Other sheets turn fractions such as 12/4 back into whole numbers. The first sheet gives the denominator and pupils find the numerator.

Where the standards put it
Common Core 3.NF.3c has grade 3 pupils express whole numbers as fractions, with 3 = 3/1 as its example. It also puts 4/4 and 1 at the same point of a number line. Texas 3.3(A) stops at one whole, and 4.3(A) goes past it in grade 4.
Why it pays off later
A whole number over 1 looks odd now and saves trouble later. Multiplying uses it: 4 × 2/3 = 4/1 × 2/3 = 8/3, with no special rule. Subtracting uses the other form: 1 − 3/8 = 8/8 − 3/8 = 5/8. Reading the bar as division, so that 12/4 = 3, is Common Core 5.NF.3.
- Start on Whole number with a given denominator: 3 = 12/4 because each of 3 wholes holds 4 fourths.
- Missing numerator or denominator turns facts into fractions: 12 goes over 3 to make 4 because 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
- Print One whole minus a fraction before subtracting mixed numbers: it is where pupils first put 8/8 to work.
Questions and answers
How do you write a whole number as a fraction?
Put it over 1: 5 = 5/1, because the fraction bar means divide and 5 ÷ 1 = 5. For any other denominator, multiply the whole number by it, so 5 = 10/2 = 15/3 = 20/4.
How do you tell if a fraction is a whole number?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. If nothing is left over, the fraction is a whole number. So 12/4 = 3 because 12 ÷ 4 = 3, while 13/4 leaves 1 over and becomes 3 1/4. The numerator has to be a multiple of the denominator.
Is 4/4 the same as 1?
Yes. Four fourths make one whole, so 4/4 = 1, and the same holds for 2/2, 3/3 or 100/100. On a number line 4/4 and 1 are the same point, which is how Common Core 3.NF.3c puts it.
How do you find a fraction of a whole number?
Multiply: 2/3 of 12 is 2/3 × 12 = 24/3 = 8. Or divide first, 12 ÷ 3 = 4, then 4 × 2 = 8. This page does not print those sheets, but multiplying fractions has them under Fraction × whole number.
