A fraction ÷ a whole number
Sharing makes the piece smaller: 1/2 ÷ 3 = 1/2 × 1/3 = 1/6. The numerator stays and the denominator is multiplied, so 3/4 ÷ 2 = 3/8. Start with Unit fraction ÷ whole number: halves to fourths.
A whole number ÷ a fraction
This asks how many pieces fit: 4 ÷ 1/3 = 12, because each whole holds 3 thirds. With a proper fraction the answer can be a mixed number, as 5 ÷ 2/3 = 7 1/2.
- Before dividing, ask whether the answer should be bigger or smaller. Fraction ÷ whole shrinks; whole ÷ fraction grows.
