Show the table

Every line on these sheets goes through grid points with whole-number coordinates, so a slope can be counted off the graph square by square. The key is worked out with whole-number arithmetic and every slope is given in lowest terms.

IdeaWhat it says
Sloperise over run: the change in y divided by the change in x, m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁)
Slope-intercept formy = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept, the point (0, b) where the line crosses the y-axis
Positive and negativea line that climbs from left to right has a positive slope; one that falls has a negative slope
Zero slopea horizontal line, y = b: it rises by nothing, however far it runs
Undefined slopea vertical line, x = a: its run is 0, and nothing can be divided by 0
From a tablepick any two rows: the difference of the y values over the difference of the x values, in the same order
Standard formAx + By = C. Put y = 0 to find the x-intercept, C ÷ A, and x = 0 to find the y-intercept, C ÷ B
From a point and a slopeput the point into y = mx + b and solve for b: b = y − mx

A short code sits at the foot of every sheet and of its answer key, so loose pages can be matched. The share link rebuilds that sheet, number for number: a key printed next week still fits the copies handed out today.

How it works

This free finding slope worksheet has 12 problems on one page: 3 graphs, 3 pairs of points, 2 tables, 2 equations and 2 sketches to mark positive, negative, zero or undefined. Print it as review before a quiz.

Five ways to ask for one number

Two tasks make an identifying slope worksheet: count rise over run on a graph, and mark a sketch positive, negative, zero or undefined. Two more make a calculating slope worksheet: subtract with two points, and compare rows of a table. Slope from an equation is the fifth, where y = −3x + 8 gives −3 on sight. Unlight a task and its share of the problems goes to the rest.

Finding the slope of a line worksheet: why the sources are mixed

Common Core standard 8.F.4 has students determine the rate of change from two (x, y) values, from a table or from a graph. Choosing the method is part of the skill, so print this sheet after the single-skill pages, not before.

  • Tick Zero and undefined slopes before a test. With it off, only the sketches ask about flat and vertical lines.
  • With Equations on Other forms too, some lines need solving for y first: 5x + 2y = −16 hides slope −5/2.
  • Tables open with x going up by 1, so slopes are whole. Even steps or Uneven steps bring in fractions.

Questions and answers

Does a find the slope worksheet fit on one page?

Yes, at 8 or 12 problems. 16 or 20 problems take 2 pages of Letter or A4, and at 20 every task gets 4 problems. The answer key prints on its own page after the sheet.

Are these slope practice worksheets with answers PDF files?

They are once you save them. Press Print and choose Save as PDF in your browser's print window for a slope worksheet PDF with the key on the last page. Share link gives a link that rebuilds the same sheet.

Can I print only the problems with no calculating?

Yes. For an identify slope worksheet, light only Slope from a graph and Positive, negative, zero, undefined and choose 8 problems: 4 graphs and 4 sketches on one page. For graphs alone, the slope from a graph worksheets print 4 to 16 a sheet.

How are the answers written in the key?

Graphs are redrawn with the rise and run dashed in, except on flat or vertical lines. Pairs, tables and equations get a slope in lowest terms, such as 5/3 or −3, or the word undefined. Each sketch gets one word: positive, negative, zero or undefined.
