Statistics Vocabulary Worksheet

Press Print worksheet to match twelve statistics terms, from mean and median to standard deviation, to their meanings.

A sample is on the sheet. What you type replaces it.

Center and spread 12

  • data Recorded values or observations, taken as a whole. The heights of 30 students are data.
  • data point One single value in a group of values. In 2, 4, 4, 5, 10 each number is a data point.
  • data set A group of values gathered for one study. 2, 4, 4, 5 and 10 form a data set.
  • deviation How far one value is from the mean. With a mean of 5, the value 10 has a deviation of 5.
  • frequency The number of times a value occurs. In 2, 4, 4, 5 and 10 the frequency of 4 is 2.
  • mean The fair share: the total split evenly among the values. The mean of 2, 4, 4, 5 and 10 is 25 ÷ 5 = 5.
  • median The value with as many values below it as above it. The median of 2, 4, 4, 5 and 10 is 4.
  • mode The most common value in a list. The mode of 2, 4, 4, 5 and 10 is 4.
  • outlier A value much higher or lower than nearly all the others. In 2, 4, 4, 5 and 40 the value 40 is an outlier.
  • range The largest value minus the smallest value. The range of 2, 4, 4, 5 and 10 is 10 − 2 = 8.
  • standard deviation A measure of spread: the root of the variance. A variance of 9 gives a standard deviation of 3.
  • variance The average of the squared distances from the mean. For 2, 4 and 6 the variance is (4 + 0 + 4) ÷ 3, about 2.67.

Box plots and graphs 12

  • bar chart A graph with one bar for each category. A bar chart might compare the number of pets of each kind.
  • box plot A graph of the median, the quartiles and the extremes. A box plot is also called a box and whisker plot.
  • histogram A bar graph of counts, with number ranges along the bottom. A histogram might show how many scores fall in 60 to 69, 70 to 79 and so on.
  • interquartile range The upper quartile minus the lower quartile. With quartiles of 4 and 10 the interquartile range is 6.
  • lower quartile The middle value of the bottom half of the data. In 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12 the lower quartile is 4.
  • maximum The highest value of a data set. The maximum of 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12 is 12.
  • minimum The lowest value of a data set. The minimum of 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12 is 2.
  • pie chart A circle cut into slices that show parts of a whole. A slice that fills half of a pie chart stands for 50 percent.
  • quartile A cut point that marks off a fourth of the sorted data. The second quartile is the median.
  • scatter plot Points plotted on two axes to show how two things relate. A scatter plot might show height against arm span.
  • upper quartile The middle value of the top half of the data. In 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12 the upper quartile is 10.
  • whisker A line from the box of a box plot out to an extreme. A box plot has two whiskers.

Sampling 12

  • bias A slant that pulls results away from the truth. Asking only soccer players about sports adds bias.
  • census A count that takes in every member of a group. A census asks everyone, not just some.
  • cluster sampling Choosing whole groups and studying those. Picking 3 classrooms and asking everyone in them is cluster sampling.
  • convenience sampling Choosing whoever is nearest or easiest to reach. Asking only the students at your lunch table is convenience sampling.
  • parameter A number that describes a whole population. The mean height of every student in the school is a parameter.
  • population The whole group that a study is about. For a school survey the population is every student in the school.
  • random sample A sample picked by chance alone, with no favorites. Drawing 50 names from a hat gives a random sample.
  • sample The part of a group that is actually measured. 50 students chosen from a school of 600 are a sample.
  • statistic A number worked out from a sample. The mean height of 50 sampled students is a statistic.
  • stratified sampling Splitting a group into layers and sampling each one. Picking 10 students from each grade is stratified sampling.
  • survey A way of collecting answers by asking a list of questions. A survey might ask students how they travel to school.
  • systematic sampling Choosing every tenth, or every nth, member of a list. Picking every 10th name on a list is systematic sampling.

How this list was compiled: Term list chosen for this site on 2026-10-03. Each meaning is written in our own words and was checked that day against the entry for the term in Wiktionary, the free dictionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, and, for the terms with no entry or no fitting sense there (stratified sampling, cluster sampling, systematic sampling), against the articles Sampling (statistics) in English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. The terms were chosen with the articles Glossary of probability and statistics and Box plot of English Wikipedia open, read the same day. Every figure in the examples is our own working. The example after each meaning is our own. Every meaning was read again on 2026-10-05: against its dictionary entry, or, for the three sampling methods, against the articles Stratified sampling, Cluster sampling and Systematic sampling. How it works

This statistics vocabulary worksheet prints twelve terms down the left and their meanings, mixed up, down the right. Three sets cover center and spread, box plots and other graphs, and sampling.

A box and whisker plot vocabulary worksheet

In Set, Box plots and graphs prints box plot, whisker, quartile, lower quartile, upper quartile, interquartile range, minimum and maximum, then histogram, bar chart, pie chart and scatter plot.

Sampling words

The third set holds the vocabulary for intro statistics worksheet pages on sampling: population, sample, census, survey, random sample, stratified, cluster, systematic and convenience sampling, bias, statistic and parameter. Under the tool each term has a worked example.

  • The examples under the tool use one small data set, so the mean, median and mode can be compared.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the total divided by the number of values. The median is the middle value once they are in order. The mode is the value that occurs most often. For 2, 4, 4, 5 and 10 they are 5, 4 and 4.

What are the parts of a box and whisker plot?

A box drawn from the lower quartile to the upper quartile, a line inside it at the median, and two whiskers that, in the plainest kind, reach the minimum and the maximum. The length of the box is the interquartile range.

Is there a statistics vocabulary worksheet PDF?

There is no PDF button on the page. Press Print worksheet and choose Save as PDF in the print window of your browser. The key is saved with it.

What does the answer key look like?

It is a copy of the worksheet, printed last, on which a line joins each term to its meaning. More options has a check box that takes it off and a See the answers button.
