Fractions Worksheets Grade 3

Pick a skill in Sheet type, from naming 1/6 of a circle to comparing 3/4 with 3/8, then press Print.

12 shapes. Name the shaded fraction: circles. Sheet 9ZL1MC, with its answer key.

How it works

Print fractions worksheets grade 3 pupils can do, on the denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8. The first sheet names shaded circles. Sheet type adds number lines, equivalents such as 1/2 = 2/4 and comparing 3/4 with 3/8. Make a new sheet changes the fractions.

What grade 3 covers

Common Core 3.NF.1 to 3.NF.3 cover unit fractions, the number line and simple equivalents such as 1/2 = 2/4. They also compare two fractions that share a numerator or a denominator. A footnote limits the grade to denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8, and Texas 3.3(A) to 3.3(H) use the same five. Adding and subtracting wait for grade 4 in both texts.

The two slips to expect

Pupils who know that 8 is more than 3 will tell you 1/8 is more than 1/3. Run Compare unit fractions, then Compare: same numerator, with a strip diagram in view. On a number line the usual slip is counting the marks and not the spaces.

  • Start with Unit fractions: name one part. The denominator counts the equal parts, and every later sheet leans on that.
  • Shade the fraction shows who reads the numerator and the denominator the right way round.
  • Texas 3.3(A) keeps grade 3 fractions at or below 1, so Texas classes can skip Number lines past 1.

Questions and answers

Is there a grade 3 fractions PDF to download?

Nothing is stored to download, because each sheet is made fresh. Press Print and choose Save as PDF in the print window. That gives you 3rd grade fractions worksheets (grade 3, PDF) with the key on page 2, unless you clear Answer key.

Why only denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8?

Both standards texts stop there in grade 3: a Common Core footnote and Texas 3.3(A) name those five. Fifths, tenths and twelfths join them in Common Core grade 4. Only 10 pairs of equal fractions exist below 1, so pupils know 1/2 = 3/6 by sight.

Should grade 3 pupils simplify fractions?

Neither standards text asks for it. Common Core 3.NF.3b has pupils recognize that 4/6 = 2/3 and explain why with a picture, before any dividing rule. So the key prints 2/4 for 2 shaded parts of 4, and accepting 1/2 as well is your call.

Can a whole number be written as a fraction in grade 3?

Under the Common Core, yes: 3.NF.3c writes 3 as 3/1 and places 4/4 at 1 on the number line. Write the whole number as a fraction practices it, and whole numbers as fractions has a page of its own.

All 16 sheet types

Equal parts and unit fractions 2

  • Unit fractions on a number line The line from 0 to 1 is cut into 4 equal parts, and the first mark after 0 is 1/4. Pupils label that first mark on each line. This is Common Core 3.NF.2a: the part from 0 to the mark has size 1/4.
  • Unit fractions: name one part A circle cut into 6 equal parts with 1 part shaded shows 1/6. The denominator counts the equal parts in the whole. Common Core 3.NF.1 and Texas 3.3(C) both start from the unit fraction.

Naming and building fractions 4

  • Build a fraction from unit fractions 3/4 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4. Pupils write a fraction as a sum of unit fractions, or count the unit fractions and write the total. Texas 3.3(D) asks for this in grade 3, and Common Core 3.NF.1 says the same thing in words.
  • Name the shaded fraction: circles A circle cut into 8 equal parts with 3 shaded shows 3/8: 3 parts, each of size 1/8. Pupils write the fraction under each circle. The key gives the fraction as shaded, so 2 parts of 4 is 2/4.
  • Name the shaded fraction: strip diagrams A strip cut into 6 equal parts with 5 shaded shows 5/6. Strip diagram is the Texas name for a fraction bar, and Texas 3.3(A) lists it beside the number line as a model to use.
  • Shade the fraction Shade 3/4: the pupil colors 3 parts of an empty shape that is already cut into 4 equal parts. It is naming in reverse, and it shows who reads the numerator and the denominator the right way round.

Fractions on a number line 3

  • Mark the fraction on a ready-cut line Mark 3/8: the line from 0 to 1 already has 8 equal spaces, so the pupil counts 3 spaces from 0 and draws a dot. Common Core 3.NF.2b describes it the same way, as marking off 3 lengths of 1/8 from 0.
  • Name the point, 0 to 1 A line from 0 to 1 has 6 equal spaces and a dot 5 spaces from 0: the dot is 5/6. Count the spaces, not the marks. Texas 3.3(B) asks pupils to name the fraction at a given point.
  • Number lines past 1 On a line from 0 to 2 cut into fourths, 4/4 sits on 1 and the next mark is 5/4. Common Core 3.NF.3c puts 4/4 and 1 at the same point. Texas 3.3(A) keeps grade 3 fractions at or below 1, so Texas classes can leave this sheet for grade 4.

Equivalent fractions and whole numbers 3

  • Equivalent fractions: missing number 3/4 = 6/8, with the 6 left blank. Every pair stays inside denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8, so pupils can check with a strip or a number line. The multiplying rule for equivalent fractions is grade 4 work (Common Core 4.NF.1).
  • Fractions that equal a whole number 4/4 = 1, 6/3 = 2 and 8/2 = 4. Pupils write the whole number, or fill in the numerator that makes the statement true. Common Core 3.NF.3c places 4/4 and 1 at the same point on the number line.
  • Write the whole number as a fraction 3 = 3/1 and 6/1 = 6, two of the three examples in Common Core 3.NF.3c. A whole number over 1 looks odd to pupils now and saves trouble when they multiply fractions in later grades.

Comparing fractions 4

  • Compare unit fractions 1/3 > 1/8. One whole cut into 3 parts gives bigger parts than the same whole cut into 8. A short sheet to run before same-numerator comparing.
  • Compare: same denominator 3/8 < 5/8. The parts are the same size, so the fraction with more of them is greater. Pupils write <, > or = in the circle. Half of Common Core 3.NF.3d and Texas 3.3(H).
  • Compare: same numerator 3/4 > 3/8. Both fractions have 3 parts, and fourths are bigger than eighths, so 3/4 is greater. The bigger denominator makes the smaller fraction, which surprises pupils who are used to whole numbers.
  • Put three fractions in order 1/8 < 1/4 < 1/2. Three fractions that share a numerator, or share a denominator, written from least to greatest. A stretch sheet: both standards texts stop at comparing two fractions in grade 3.
