A food chain word search, then the rest of the unit

For a food chain word search, pick Food Chains and Food Webs in the Start from a list row under the puzzle: 26 words, from Producer and Consumer to Apex predator. Predators, Prey and Partnerships (23) and Habitats and Nonliving Factors (18) suit the next lessons. Biomes of the World (25) runs from Tundra to Coral reef. Water, Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles (18) and Populations, Communities and Change (22) close the unit.

Two reading levels, one sheet size

Easy Ecosystem holds 27 words of 3 to 5 letters, Owl and Moss among them. Hard Ecosystem holds 58 of 9 to 14 letters: press Hard, and the grid grows when a word needs room. Either prints on 2 pages, Letter or A4, answer key second.

  • Biotic and Abiotic sit in separate lists, because BIOTIC reads inside ABIOTIC and a grid with both would hide one.
  • Fourteen entries are two words, such as Food web and Coral reef. Each is hidden closed up: FOODWEB.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?

A food chain is a single line of what eats what, from a plant to a top hunter. A food web draws every feeding link in a community, many chains crossing. Both terms are in Food Chains and Food Webs.

What is a keystone species?

A species with a very large effect for its numbers. The idea was named in 1969 after studies of starfish. Keystone is in Predators, Prey and Partnerships, beside Wolf and Coral.

Can pupils solve the ecosystem word search puzzle from definitions?

Yes. Tick Show clues, not words, in More options. Niche then reads "The role a species plays in its community, including the resources it uses." Sixteen clues can run past one sheet, so check the print preview.
