Questions and answers

What are the main parts of the eye?

Light passes through the cornea, enters by the pupil, which the iris sizes, and is focused by the lens on the retina. Photoreceptors there turn it into electrical signals, and the optic nerve carries them to the brain.

What is the difference between rods and cones?

Both are the retina's photoreceptor cells. Rods work in dim light and do nearly all the work of night vision; a human retina has about 92 million. Cones work in daylight and make color vision possible.

Why do pupils get bigger and smaller?

The iris changes the size of the pupil to control how much light reaches the retina. A circular muscle in the iris narrows the pupil and a radial one widens it.

Which animal has the largest eyes?

The colossal squid: its eyes are the largest of any known creature, with a diameter estimated at 27 to 30 centimeters.
