Six lists, one for each strand of the course

Nine lists wait under the puzzle, at Start from a list. Six match the course: Pollution and Waste (28 words), Climate and Atmosphere (22), Natural Resources and Energy (20), Conservation and Biodiversity (22), Land and Water Use (20) and Testing Air, Water and Soil (18), fieldwork words, Quadrat to Secchi disk. Easy Environmental Science has 25 words of 3 to 5 letters, such as Smog and Peat.

Printing the sheet and its key

Print or save as PDF gives 2 pages on Letter or A4: the puzzle under a Name and Date line, then the answer key with every word ringed. For a file, pick Save as PDF in the print window.

  • Nineteen entries, like Acid rain and Secchi disk, hide as one run of letters: ACIDRAIN. Key terms are single words.
  • Eutrophication needs 14 squares: for Hard Environmental Science, the grid grows when a word finds no room.

Questions and answers

How is this different from an ecosystem or Earth Day word search?

An ecosystem word search covers food chains, producers, consumers and biomes. This one covers what people do to air, water and land, and how it is measured: Leachate, Albedo, Bycatch, Turbidity. An Earth Day puzzle is a shorter holiday list for younger pupils.

Which list suits a high school environmental science class?

Hard Environmental Science: 49 terms of 9 to 14 letters, such as Eutrophication, Sequestration and Desalination. Press Hard and words run in every direction, backwards too. Younger pupils can start on the easy list: Coal, Dam, Ozone.

Can I add terms from my own unit?

Yes. The list under the puzzle holds the 16 words on the sheet. Type to edit them, or paste your own list, one term per line, and it takes their place.

What is the Keeling curve?

A graph of the carbon dioxide in the air, measured at Mauna Loa in Hawaii since 1958. It is in Climate and Atmosphere, hidden as KEELINGCURVE. Tick Show clues, not words, in More options, and pupils hunt it from that definition.
