How it works
This food word puzzle is a word scramble of 30 fruits, vegetables and everyday meals, with a short hint under each word. Pupils write the food on the line, and the answer key prints on a page of its own.

Three plates of words
Easy is short: Egg, Rice, Kiwi, Pizza. Medium, the opening sheet, holds Carrot, Spinach, Tortilla and Avocado. The hard list is the spelling test: Broccoli, Zucchini, Asparagus and Cauliflower.
For a healthy eating unit
Ask pupils to sort the answers into fruit, vegetable and other once the sheet is done. Each press of New scramble mixes the letters again, so partners can swap sheets.
- Zucchini and Broccoli both hide a double letter: a word bank at the foot helps pupils who spell them with one.
Questions and answers
What foods are in this food word puzzle?
Thirty: fruits such as Kiwi, Banana and Blueberry, vegetables from Carrot to Asparagus, and meals and staples such as Pizza, Rice, Omelet and Spaghetti. None is a brand name.
What grades is it for?
The easy list suits kindergarten and grade 1, medium suits grades 2 and 3, and the hard list, with Cauliflower at 11 letters, suits grade 4 and up.
Does each scramble have just one answer?
Yes. Foods such as Melon (lemon), Pear (reap) and Peach (cheap) were left out because their letters spell a second common word.
Is there an answer key for the food word puzzle?
Yes. Print gives the puzzle, then the answer key on a page of its own. For packed-lunch foods such as Sandwich and Pretzel, the word scramble maker has a Lunchbox list of its own.
