Seven themed lists, from the food groups to the spice rack
Fruits, Vegetables, Bread and Grains, and Protein and Dairy follow the food groups of MyPlate, the guide the USDA published from 2011 to January 2026. Meals holds 19 dishes, from Taco to Pierogi. Pizza has 23 words, enough for a pizza word search printable of its own, and Spice Rack and Pantry has 33, from Saffron to Ketchup.
Facts tucked into the clues
Many of the 139 clues carry a fact. Bakers in southern Germany have used the pretzel as their sign since the 1100s. Saffron is by weight the costliest spice. Burrito is Spanish for little donkey. Nachos are named after Ignacio Anaya, known as Nacho, who first made them in Mexico in 1943. To print these facts, tick Show clues, not words.
- Cooking verbs and tools, from Whisk to Simmer, have a page of their own: the cooking word search.
Questions and answers
How do I make the food word search hard?
Pick Long and Tricky, then press Hard. The list holds the 39 words of 8 to 11 letters, such as Pomegranate and Cauliflower, and Hard hides them in all eight directions, backwards included.
Is there a food word search pdf?
Yes. Press Print or save as PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print window. The file has two pages that fit Letter and A4: the puzzle with a name and date line, then the answer key.
Is the food word search free printable for a whole class?
Yes. There is no account and no limit on copies. Each press of New puzzle draws a fresh set of words and rebuilds the answer key to match, so every table can work on a different grid.
Why is Tomato in the pizza word find list and not under Vegetables?
Because it is cooked down into pizza sauce, and because to a botanist it is a fruit, a berry in fact. The clues say the same of Banana, while Strawberry is not a true berry and Peanut, in Protein and Dairy, is a legume.
