Six lists, one for each part of the course
The Start from a list row, under the puzzle, shows 9 lists. Six are units: Inside the Earth (20 words), Plate Tectonics (20), Earthquakes and Volcanoes (20), Earth in Space (24), Spheres, Maps and Branches (24) and Geologic Time (22). Teaching moon phases? Choose Earth in Space, and New puzzle draws 16 of its 24 words. Easy Earth Science keeps to the 25 words of 3 to 5 letters, such as Moho, Ash and Neap.
Rocks, minerals and erosion have pages of their own
Rock names, mineral names, the rock cycle and the words of weathering and erosion are left out. Each of those units has a puzzle of its own, listed on the science unit word searches page.
- Volcanology is filed with the branches of the subject, away from Volcano, so one answer never hides inside another.
- Ring of Fire becomes RINGOFFIRE in the grid, and 13 more entries drop a space or hyphen the same way.
- Asthenosphere fills 13 squares: keep Hard Earth Science on a grid of 15 by 15 or more.
Questions and answers
What words are in an earth science word search?
The key terms are Crust, Mantle, Core, Plate, Fault, Earthquake, Volcano, Tsunami, Axis, Orbit, Rotation, Season, Tide and Eclipse, plus ten more such as Pangaea and Equinox. Other lists add the layers of the atmosphere, Moon phases, map terms and the geologic time scale.
Do the earth science puzzles have an answer key?
Yes. Print or save as PDF makes 2 pages on Letter or A4: the grid below a Name and Date line, the word list and a two-line writing task, then the key with every word ringed. Show answers rings them on screen as well.
How hard are the puzzles?
As hard as the list you choose. Easy Earth Science has 25 short words; Hard Earth Science has the 49 words of 9 letters or more, Asthenosphere and Superposition among them. Easy runs words across and down, Medium adds diagonals and Hard adds backwards words.
How old is the Earth?
About 4.54 billion years. In this puzzle that is the clue for Billion, in the Geologic Time list: tick Show clues, not words, in More options, and the sheet prints "A thousand million; the Earth is about 4.54 of these years old."
