What the sheet holds

Bold dashed lines, shapes, fringes and a spiral for scissors practice, and a name puzzle to cut apart.

How it works

These cutting shapes worksheets open on four closed shapes in bold dashed outline, two across and two down, each with its name printed under it. The cut goes all the way round a shape and ends where it began.

Six shapes, in the order they are added

How many adds the shapes in a fixed order: triangle, diamond, circle, square, star, rectangle. The triangle, diamond, square and rectangle are straight cuts with corners. The circle is one curve with no corner. The star, the fifth shape, has ten corners, five pointing out and five in.

A cut shapes worksheet with one to six shapes

How many sets the number. One shape fills the page. Two sit one above the other. Three or four print two across, as on the opening sheet. Five or six print two across in three rows, smaller. Under More options, Direction set to Landscape puts five or six in two rows of three.

  • The name sits under each shape, outside the dashed line, so a cut-out shape carries no word.

Questions and answers

Can these be used as free printable shapes to cut out for a craft?

Yes, for the six shapes this page prints. Set How many to 1 for a triangle that fills the page, or to 6 for all six at a smaller size. The outline is dashed, not solid, and nothing is printed inside it.

Are there cut and paste shapes worksheets here?

Not on this page: these shapes are cut out and nothing is pasted. The sorting worksheets print shape tiles to cut out and paste under headings such as Squares, Ovals and Hearts.

Which shapes are on the sheet?

The opening sheet has a triangle, a diamond, a circle and a square. Five adds a star and six a rectangle. A setting prints the same shapes every time, and this page does not print an oval or a heart.

Can children trace the shapes before they cut them?

The dashed outline can be drawn over with a crayon first. For sheets made for a pencil, with a starting dot on every shape and a direction arrow on every row, see shape tracing worksheets.
