How it works
Each sheet draws 8 of our 80 past tense sentences. The wrong choice is the -ed form children reach for, such as bringed or goed, and sometimes the past participle, such as seen for saw.

Three sets under Set
Set opens on Past tense (80 sentences). With has or have (41) asks for the past participle: She has written three letters, not wrote. Regular or irregular (43) names a verb and its past tense, such as walk and walked or sing and sang, to circle as regular or irregular.
Verbs with two pasts are left out
A verb with two accepted past forms, such as dreamed and dreamt or hung and hanged, never appears, so each blank has one right answer. Every form was checked against Wiktionary's table of English irregular verbs.
- Read the sentence aloud with each choice. A form such as eated usually sounds wrong once a child hears it.
Questions and answers
Is this an irregular and regular verbs worksheet too?
Yes. Under Set, pick Regular or irregular. Each line names a verb and its past tense, such as jump and jumped or go and went, and the child circles regular or irregular.
What grade learns irregular past tense verbs?
The Common Core language standards ask second graders to form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs such as sat, hid and told (L.2.1d), and third graders to form and use regular and irregular verbs (L.3.1d).
Is there an answer key?
Yes. It prints as the last page: the same sheet with the right word circled and written into every blank.
