How it works

This classroom stopwatch is an online stopwatch for kids and teachers: it counts up from zero in large digits, and Lap lists each time under the clock. More options holds setups for PE, sports day and science.

Time a class in four presses

1. Press Start the stopwatch, or the space bar. 2. Press Lap each time a student or a team finishes. Each time is listed with the total, newest first. 3. Press Stop. From three laps on, the fastest and the slowest are marked. 4. Reset clears the clock and the laps, and Undo brings them back.

  • Copy laps, under the list once the clock is stopped, pastes the times into a spreadsheet as columns.
  • A reload or a closed tab does not lose a run: it is kept in this browser and carries on from the right time.

Questions and answers

Is this an online stopwatch for kids?

Yes. One large button starts and stops it, and the time is the largest thing on the page, so a child can run it for the class. It is a simple digital stopwatch: nothing to set and no sound.

Is there a fun stopwatch for a class?

This one is plain on purpose: digits and one button. The fun is in what you time. Under More options, Beat the clock tidy-up gives the class a time to beat tomorrow, and in Class relay legs the fourth press stops the clock.

Does the classroom stopwatch go full screen?

Yes. Press Full screen and the large digits fill the screen of a classroom board or a school laptop, with Lap and Stop under them. Press Esc or Leave full screen to bring the page back.

What is the difference between this stopwatch and a classroom timer?

This stopwatch counts up from zero until you press Stop, so it shows how long something took. A classroom timer counts down from a length you set and ends at zero. For a countdown, open the classroom timers.

Can students use it as a stopwatch for a science lesson?

Yes. The clock reads to a hundredth of a second. For an experiment timed by hand, the setup Science experiment in tenths cuts the reading to tenths. Press Lap to keep a time in the list while the clock runs on.

All 8 stopwatch setups

In the classroom 4

  • Beat the clock tidy-up A game for any class from preschool up. Start when you say go and stop when the last chair is pushed in. The clock reads whole seconds. Write the time on the board and let the class try to beat it tomorrow.
  • Class stopwatch The setup this page opens in: minutes, seconds and hundredths, with Start, Lap and Reset. Press Lap for each student or team that finishes, and the fastest and slowest are marked from three laps on.
  • Station rotations Press Mark station each time the groups move on. The list shows how long each station really took, which is the number to plan the next lesson with. Whole seconds.
  • Three, two, one, go A three second count in large digits before the clock starts from zero, with no sound, so the class can call it out and everyone starts together. The clock reads tenths.

PE and sports day 3

  • Class relay legs Press Mark leg as each runner tags the next. The fourth press stops the clock, so the last runner's time and the team's total are both on the screen.
  • Laps of the field One press each time the runner passes you. Each lap is listed beside the total, and the line under the list gives the mean lap.
  • Sports day finish list One start, then one press for every runner across the line. The list is the finish order with a time for each: 1st, 2nd, 3rd. A helper writes the names in the same order.

Science 1

  • Science experiment in tenths The clock reads to a tenth of a second, cut and never rounded. For anything a class times by hand: a ball down a ramp, a paper helicopter falling, ice melting in a dish.
