Sound

On a phone or a tablet the silent switch mutes this sound as well, and the page cannot tell. Press Test sound to check.

Music

It plays while the timer runs and stops at the end.

Keys: Space starts and pauses, R resets, F is full screen. They rest while a button or a field has the focus.

How it works

When do we stop? Press Start with music on this online twenty minute timer and a line under the digits answers with the clock time 20 minutes from now.

Read the full guide

What time will it be in 20 minutes?

The line reads Ends at and the time on this device's clock. Pause and it clears. Resume and it shows the new time. The line stays in the full screen view, so the whole class can read it: press Full screen, or F on a keyboard.

Reading the 20 minute visual timer a quarter at a time

A quarter of the disc is 5 minutes. Four-station rotation gives each round one quarter. Reading conferences gives 4 pupils 5 minutes apiece. Spelling test and check reads 20 words at 45 seconds each, then leaves 5 minutes to swap papers.

  • In the last 2 minutes the disc of this radial timer changes color inside a dashed ring.
  • Changing tabs leaves full screen, by the browser's rule. Press Full screen again: the 20 minute countdown kept going.

Questions and answers

Is there a 20 min timer with no sound?

Yes. Choose No music in the list beside the main button, which then reads Start the timer. The end sound is off unless you pick one, so this silent timer finishes without a sound: the screen reads Time is up.

Can I set an alarm for 20 minutes?

Yes. For a 20 minute alarm, open More options before you start and pick Soft chime, Hand bell or Wood block from When the time is up. It rings once at 0:00. Test sound plays it at once, so you can check the volume.

Does the 20 minute timer play relaxing music?

It opens on Drift, the slowest of four tracks made in the browser: one soft chord every 4 seconds, no tune and no words. It suits Silent reading block, which hides the digits and leaves only the disc.

Can I use it as a 20 minute classroom timer for stations?

Yes. Choose Two-station swap for 2 turns of 10 minutes, with a tidy warning 30 seconds before the change, or Four-station rotation for 4 turns of 5. Pick it first: Ready-made routines (18) sits under the timer, outside full screen.

Is a 20 minute timer for kids easy to read from the back?

The shape is. Half the disc gone means 10 minutes left, and that reads from anywhere. Single minutes are harder, since each slice is thin, so the digits carry the detail. In full screen the disc and the digits both grow with the window.

All 18 routines

Reading 3

  • Book club discussion Five minutes to reread and mark one passage worth talking about, 10 minutes of discussion in the group, then 5 minutes to write a goal for the next meeting. 5 + 10 + 5. Cues: 15:00 Open the discussion; 5:00 Write your goal for next time.

  • Silent reading block Eighteen minutes of reading with no digits on the board, only the disc getting smaller. At 2:00 pupils finish the page they are on, and at 0:30 bookmarks go in and books go away. Cues: 2:00 Finish the page you are on; 0:30 Bookmark in. Books away.

  • Two-station swap Two stations of 10 minutes each. A tidy warning shows 30 seconds before the swap and again 30 seconds before the end, so each group finds the station ready. 10 + 10. Cues: 10:30 30 seconds: tidy your station; 10:00 Swap stations; 0:30 Tidy up for the next group.

  • Science investigation Five minutes to set up and write a prediction, 10 minutes to test and record each result, 5 minutes to pack away and write what you found. 5 + 10 + 5. Cues: 15:00 Start testing. Record each result; 5:00 Pack away. Write what you found.

How this list was compiled: Own work, written in September 2026 from common classroom practice. Each routine is one way to spend exactly 20 minutes with a class, and each cue is given as the time left when it appears. The timings are suggestions, not rules or research findings. Licence: own work
