Sound

On a phone or a tablet the silent switch mutes this sound as well, and the page cannot tell. Press Test sound to check.

Music

It plays while the timer runs and stops at the end.

Keys: Space starts and pauses, R resets, F is full screen. They rest while a button or a field has the focus.

How it works

This 10 minute timer online opens at 10:00, which is 600 seconds. For the last 2 minutes the disc changes color inside a dashed ring, so a class working alone sees the end coming.

How to set a timer for 10 minutes

It is set when the page opens, so the ten minute timer needs one press: Start with music. For a silent countdown, choose No music in the list beside the button first. Full screen, on the timer, fills the board. While it runs, a line under the digits reads Ends at and the clock time 10 minutes from now.

A 10 minute visual timer in ten slices

The disc is a radial timer that loses one slice a minute, so half the disc is 5 minutes. Ten-question quiz gives every slice one question. Partner reading swaps readers at the halfway line. Twenty-word spelling test reads 20 words at 30 seconds each.

  • For a longer countdown, press + 1 min under the disc, also while it runs.

Questions and answers

Is there a 10 minute timer with relaxing music?

Four tracks are made in the browser, none with words. Drift is the calmest: one soft chord every 4 seconds. Choosing a track in the Music list plays a few seconds of it, so you can check the volume before you start.

Does the 10 min timer have an alarm?

Not until you choose one. For a 10 minute alarm, open More options and, under When the time is up, pick Soft chime, Hand bell or Wood block. With none chosen, the music just stops at 0:00.

Can I use it as a 10 minute timer for kids in a classroom?

Yes. Open Ready-made routines (18) and pick a class job. Snack time shows Last bites. Wrappers in the bin at 3:00 left, then Wipe your spot at 1:00. Art clean-up walks the room through tools, tables, floor and hands.

What happens when the 10 minute countdown reaches zero?

The screen reads Time is up in a steady color, with nothing flashing. A count-up such as +0:42 shows how far over you are, and the main button reads Start again for another ten minutes.

Independent work 6

  • Finish-up time Pupils work through their folder of unfinished work. At 5:00 they should be closing one job and choosing the next, and at 1:00 everything goes back in the folder. Cues: 5:00 Halfway: one job finished?; 1:00 Work back in your folder.
  • Handwriting practice Two minutes of warm-up patterns, 6 minutes copying the model lines, then 2 minutes to circle the best letter in each line. Stop at ten minutes: a tired hand practices sloppy letters. Cues: 8:00 Start the model lines; 2:00 Circle your best letter in each line.
  • Independent practice Eight minutes of silent work on the set questions. When the disc turns amber for the last 2 minutes, pupils stop starting new questions and check the ones they have done. Cues: 2:00 Check the answers you have.
  • Journal entry Seven minutes of writing, 2 minutes to reread and fix capitals and periods, then 1 minute to read one sentence to a neighbor. 7 + 2 + 1 fills the ten. Cues: 3:00 Reread. Fix capitals and periods; 1:00 Read one sentence to a neighbor.
  • Problem of the day Three minutes alone, 3 minutes comparing methods with a partner, then 4 minutes solving it together on the board. Keep the answer hidden until the last block. Cues: 7:00 Compare with your partner; 4:00 Eyes up: we solve it together.
  • Read, then jot Eight minutes of reading, then the amber stretch is for writing: bookmark in, one sentence about what just happened in the book. The disc without digits keeps eyes on the page. Cues: 2:00 Bookmark in. Write one sentence.

Partner and table talk 4

  • Number talk One mental math problem on the board. One minute of silent thinking, 6 minutes of pupils explaining their methods while you record them, 3 minutes to try a similar problem. 1 + 6 + 3. Cues: 9:00 Share how you worked it out; 3:00 Try the next one the same way.
  • Partner reading Partner A reads aloud for 5 minutes while B follows with a finger and helps on hard words. At 5:00 they swap, so both read for the same time. Half the disc is one reader. Cues: 5:00 Swap readers.
  • Peer feedback swap Swap drafts. Four minutes to read and write two things that work and one question, then 3 minutes for each partner to talk through their notes. 4 + 3 + 3. Cues: 6:00 Partner A explains their notes; 3:00 Partner B explains their notes.
  • Table discussion Four pupils at a table speak for 2 minutes each, in seat order, while the others only listen. The last 2 minutes are for agreeing on one answer to report. 4 x 2 + 2. Cues: 8:00 Speaker 2; 6:00 Speaker 3; 4:00 Speaker 4; 2:00 Agree on one answer to report.

Quizzes and practice 3

  • Ten-question quiz Ten questions at a minute each, so every slice of the disc is one question. Read the next question each time a slice goes. The cues number the questions for anyone who loses count. Cues: 9:00 Question 2; 8:00 Question 3; 7:00 Question 4; 6:00 Question 5; 5:00 Question 6; 4:00 Question 7; 3:00 Question 8; 2:00 Question 9; 1:00 Question 10.
  • Twenty-word spelling test Twenty words at 30 seconds a word fill the ten minutes exactly: say the word, say it in a sentence, say it again. The halfway cue appears as you read word 11. Cues: 5:00 Halfway: word 11.
  • Two-round facts practice Round 1 is 4 minutes on a facts sheet. Two minutes to mark it with the answer key and circle the misses. Round 2 is 4 minutes on the same sheet, trying to beat round 1. 4 + 2 + 4. Cues: 6:00 Pens down. Mark round 1; 4:00 Round 2: beat your own score.

Whole-class routines 5

  • Art clean-up Four jobs in order: tools washed and back by 6:00, tables wiped by 3:00, floor and sinks checked by 1:00, then hands washed and seated. 4 + 3 + 2 + 1. Cues: 6:00 Tools back. Now wipe the tables; 3:00 Check the floor and the sinks; 1:00 Wash hands and sit down.
  • Carpet mini-lesson One minute to link to yesterday, 6 minutes to teach and model one skill, 3 minutes for pupils to try it with a partner on the carpet. The cue at 3:00 is your signal to stop talking. 1 + 6 + 3. Cues: 9:00 Today's skill; 3:00 Your turn: try it with a partner.
  • Morning meeting Greeting for 2 minutes, sharing for 4, a group activity for 3 and the morning message for 1. The cues move the circle on so the meeting ends on time. 2 + 4 + 3 + 1. Cues: 8:00 Sharing time; 4:00 Group activity; 1:00 Read the morning message.
  • Read-aloud chapter Eight minutes of reading aloud, then pupils tell a partner what they think happens next. Nobody needs digits while they listen, so this one opens as the disc alone. Cues: 2:00 What happens next? Tell a partner.
  • Snack time Seven minutes to eat, then wrappers in the bin at 3:00 and a wiped spot at 1:00. Younger classes can watch the disc shrink and ignore the digits. Cues: 3:00 Last bites. Wrappers in the bin; 1:00 Wipe your spot.
