Grade 1 3

  • Advent door subtraction stories within 20 16 doors of the Advent calendar are open and 9 of them held a star, so 7 held something else. Count up from 9 to check.
  • Christmas card addition stories within 20 8 cards on the shelf and 7 on the door are 15 cards. Make ten first: 8 + 2 + 5.
  • Three stockings: add three numbers Three stockings hold 4, 6 and 5 small gifts, which is 15. Make ten with 4 + 6, then add 5.

Grade 2 2

  • Toy drive addition stories within 100 The toy drive has 37 toys and gets 28 more, which is 65. Add the ones first and carry the ten.
  • Tree lot subtraction stories within 100 A tree lot starts with 83 trees and sells 47, so 36 are left. Open a ten first, because 3 ones are too few to take 7 from.

Grade 3 2

  • Cookie trays and gift bags: multiplication stories 4 trays with 9 cookies on each hold 36 cookies. Each tray is one equal group, so pupils can skip count by 9.
  • Sharing the cookies: division stories within 100 48 cookies packed 6 to a tin fill 8 tins. The matching fact is 6 × 8 = 48.

Grade 4 4

  • Advent doors and twelve days: facts to multiply An Advent calendar has twenty-four doors, so 6 calendars have 144: 6 × 20 = 120 and 6 × 4 = 24.
  • Candy cane cases: 1 digit by 3 digits 6 cases of 288 candy canes is 1,728. Multiply each place: 6 × 200, 6 × 80 and 6 × 8.
  • Ribbon and bows: what happens to the remainder? A bow takes 9 inches of ribbon. 60 inches make 6 full bows, because 60 ÷ 9 = 6 R 6 and the last 6 inches are too short.
  • Tree farm multiplication: 2 digits by 2 digits 24 rows of 35 fir trees is 840 trees. Use an area model: 20 × 35 = 700 and 4 × 35 = 140.

Grade 5 1

  • Toy drive division: divide by 2 digits 408 toys shared equally among 17 families is 24 toys each. Estimate first: 400 ÷ 20 = 20.

How this list was compiled: The stories, their wording and the teaching notes are our own work. The numbers are drawn fresh for every sheet and each answer key is worked out from the numbers printed on that sheet. Two facts were checked on 2026-09-20: most Advent calendars have twenty-four doors and start on December 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advent_calendar), and the twelve days of Christmas run from December 25 to January 5 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twelve_Days_of_Christmas_(song)). Cookie, gift, ornament and tree farm numbers are invented for the stories.
