Kindergarten math worksheets: addition and subtraction in order

In Sheet type, start with Picture addition, sums to 5, then Picture addition, sums to 10. Dice dot addition, Domino addition with blanks and Ten frame addition, two colors print sums to 10 in fixed patterns. Subtraction follows: Cross out to subtract, within 5, then Cross out to subtract, within 10, and last Write the subtraction sentence.

Addition worksheets for grade 1 with pictures

Number and dots, count on prints 8 + 3 as a numeral and three dots. Two ten frames, make ten first turns 8 + 6 into 10 + 4. Three groups, sums to 20 adds three sets, as in 2 + 6 + 4 = 12.

  • Texas K.2(D) wants small groups recognized instantly, organized or random. Print Dice dot addition, then Scattered pictures, sums to 10.
  • PreK addition worksheets open on 6 problems. Set Problems to 4 when that is still too long for one sitting.
  • After a week of picture addition, kindergarten math worksheets can drop the pictures. Print Numbers only, sums to 10.

Questions and answers

Is there an addition and subtraction worksheets for kindergarten PDF?

Yes, through your browser. Press Print, then choose Save as PDF in your browser's print window. A kindergarten addition and subtraction worksheets PDF made this way holds the sheet and its answer key, both marked with the same sheet code.

Are there addition worksheets preschool and pre-K children can do?

Yes, two pre-K addition worksheets. One more, with pictures prints sums like 3 + 1 = 4, and Put together, sums to 4 keeps every group to 3 pictures or fewer. Both are addition worksheets for preschool groups.

Are there mixed addition and subtraction worksheets kindergarten classes can use?

Not on one sheet yet. No sheet here mixes both signs. For kinder addition and subtraction worksheets, print Picture addition, sums to 10 and Cross out to subtract, within 10 as a pair. Both draw their pictures in rows of 5.

What should math worksheets for kindergarten addition and subtraction cover?

Common Core K.OA.2 asks kindergartners to add and subtract within 10 with objects or drawings, and K.OA.5 asks for fluency within 5. A footnote to K.OA.1 says drawings need not show details, only the mathematics, so dots will do.

All 22 sheet types

Pictures, sums within 5 4

  • Adding zero, the empty plate Two plates, one with pictures on it and one empty: 4 + 0 = 4. Adding zero changes nothing, and an empty plate makes that plain long before a pupil meets it as a rule. The empty plate can be on either side.
  • Draw the dots yourself, sums to 5 The numerals are printed and the boxes above them are empty. For 1 + 3 = 4 the pupil draws 1 dot and 3 dots, then counts them all. A Common Core footnote says drawings need not show details, only the mathematics, so dots are enough.
  • Picture addition, sums to 5 Two small groups of one picture, with the numerals printed underneath and a box for the total: 3 + 2 = 5. Sums stop at 5, the range in which the Common Core asks kindergartners for fluency (K.OA.5).
  • Write the number sentence, sums to 5 Only the pictures are printed. The pupil counts each group and fills in ___ + ___ = ___, for example 2 + 1 = 3. That is the move from a drawing to an equation, two of the ways K.OA.1 lists for showing addition.

Pictures, sums within 10 5

  • Draw the dots yourself, sums to 10 Numerals and empty boxes. For 2 + 6 = 8 the pupil draws 2 dots and 6 dots, then counts. Watch how they count: from 1 every time, or on from 6. That tells you which sheet to print next.
  • Numbers only, sums to 10 No pictures: 12 facts written side by side, with sums from 2 to 10 and no zeros, such as 6 + 2 = 8. Print it as the check at the end of a week of picture sheets. Fingers are still allowed.
  • Picture addition, sums to 10 The page opens on this sheet. Groups are drawn in rows of 5, so a group of 7 shows as 5 and 2 and nobody has to count it from 1: 7 + 2 = 9. Eight problems fill the page, and the key repeats each picture with its sum.
  • Scattered pictures, sums to 10 The pictures are scattered, not lined up, so pupils need a way to keep track: cross off each one as it is counted. 6 + 3 = 9. Totals stop at 10, the most K.CC.5 asks a kindergartner to count when things are scattered.
  • Write the number sentence, sums to 10 Pictures only, in rows of 5, and the pupil writes the whole sentence, such as 5 + 4 = 9. Texas asks kindergartners to explain their adding with pictorial models and number sentences (K.3(C)). This sheet puts the two side by side.

Dice, dominoes and ten frames 3

  • Dice dot addition Two dice faces and a box for the total: 4 + 2 = 6. A die shows each number in one fixed pattern, so pupils learn to name a face of 5 or 6 at a glance and count on from it. Pairs that total more than 10 are left out.
  • Domino addition with blanks One domino per problem, and its two ends are the two numbers: 3 + 5 = 8. An end can be blank, as in a real double-six set, so 6 + 0 = 6 turns up too. Tiles that total more than 10 are left out, and so is the double blank.
  • Ten frame addition, two colors The sheet draws a frame of 2 rows of 5 squares and fills it with counters in two shades. The pupil writes the sentence, 6 + 3 = 9. The one empty square shows that 9 is 1 short of 10, which pupils lean on later when they make ten.

Preschool and pre-K first steps 2

  • One more, with pictures A group of pictures, then a single picture after the plus sign: 3 + 1 = 4. Adding 1 is the same as saying the next counting number, so these are the first facts to teach. Sums stay within 5, and with only four such facts some come round twice with a different picture.
  • Put together, sums to 4 Every group holds 3 pictures or fewer, few enough to take in without counting: 2 + 2 = 4. Only six such facts exist, from 1 + 1 up to 3 + 1, and a page of six problems prints each of them once.

Subtraction with pictures 3

  • Cross out to subtract, within 5 One group of up to 5 pictures. The pupil crosses out the number after the minus sign and counts what is left: 5 − 2 = 3. K.OA.5 asks for fluency within 5 in both directions, so this is the partner to the first addition sheet.
  • Cross out to subtract, within 10 Up to 10 pictures in rows of 5: 9 − 4 = 5. Texas calls this the action of separating (K.3(A)). Crossing out from the end of the last row keeps the pictures that are left in one block that is easy to count.
  • Write the subtraction sentence Some pictures are already crossed out and no numerals are printed. The pupil counts them all, counts the crossed ones and writes 7 − 3 = 4. It shows you whether the minus sign carries any meaning for them yet.

Grade 1 with pictures, sums to 20 5

  • Number and dots, count on The first number is a numeral and the second is a row of dots. For 8 + 3 = 11 the pupil says 8, then touches the dots for 9, 10, 11. The dots never pass 3. The standard's own example is counting on 2 to add 2 (1.OA.5).
  • Picture addition, sums to 20 Both groups in rows of 5, with totals from 11 to 20: 9 + 7 = 16. Counting every picture is slow at this size, and that is the point. Pupils start to see 9 as 1 short of 10 and look for a quicker way.
  • Picture doubles, 1 + 1 to 10 + 10 The same group of pictures twice, like the two ends of a double domino: 6 + 6 = 12. Near doubles grow out of them, as in 6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1 = 13.
  • Three groups, sums to 20 Three groups of pictures with three numerals underneath: 2 + 6 + 4 = 12. A pupil who spots that 6 and 4 make 10 can think 2 + 10 instead, the example 1.OA.3 gives. Grade 1 caps three addends at a sum of 20 (1.OA.2).
  • Two ten frames, make ten first Two ten frames side by side. For 8 + 6 = 14 the pupil redraws 2 of the 6 counters in the first frame to fill it, so the picture reads 10 + 4. That is making ten, the strategy named in 1.OA.6 and in Texas 1.3(D): 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14.
