All 19 sheet types

Kindergarten 3

  • Count leaves and apples: how many in all? 3 leaves and 4 apples make 7 in all. Pupils touch each picture once as they count, then write the total.
  • Thanksgiving addition stories within 10 4 pumpkin pies and 3 apple pies are 7 pies. Read each story aloud and let pupils draw circles for the pies before they count.
  • Thanksgiving subtraction stories within 10 A paper turkey has 8 tail feathers and 3 are colored in, so 5 still need color. Ten counters and a cup act it out.

Grade 1 3

  • Add three numbers at the Thanksgiving table 6 red, 4 yellow and 5 orange leaves make 15. Look for a pair that makes ten first: 6 + 4, then 5 more.

  • Thanksgiving subtraction stories within 20 15 rolls with 7 eaten leaves 8. The stories take away, take apart and compare, so pupils must read what is asked.

Grade 2 2

  • Food drive addition stories within 100 27 cans in week one and 35 in week two make 62 cans. Most sums regroup, so have pupils add the ones first.
  • Pie sale subtraction stories within 100 A bakery made 84 pies and sold 37, so 47 are left. Check by adding back: 47 + 37 = 84.

Grade 3 5

  • Food bank subtraction within 1,000 A food bank packed 720 boxes and handed out 385, so 335 are left. Subtracting across a zero is the step to watch.
  • School food drive addition within 1,000 Grade three brought 268 cans and grade four brought 175, which is 443 cans. Estimate first: about 270 + 180 = 450.
  • Sharing the feast: division stories within 100 24 dinner rolls shared by 6 people is 4 rolls each. The check is multiplication: 6 × 4 = 24.
  • Thanksgiving multiplication stories: tables and trays 6 tables with 8 plates on each need 48 plates. Pupils can sketch the tables as boxes and skip count by 8.
  • Turkey and table facts to multiply One pumpkin pie recipe uses two eggs, so 7 pies use 14 eggs. The fixed number is written as a word, so pupils must find it in the story.

Grade 4 4

  • Packing day division: divide by 1 digit 96 cans packed equally into 6 boxes is 16 cans a box. Split 96 into 60 and 36, then divide each part by 6.
  • School kitchen multiplication: 2 digits by 1 digit 7 trays of stuffing with 24 scoops each is 168 scoops. Break 24 apart: 7 × 20 = 140 and 7 × 4 = 28.
  • Seats, bags and pies: what happens to the remainder? 50 guests at tables of 8 need 7 tables, not 6, because 50 ÷ 8 = 6 R 2 and the last 2 guests still sit down.
  • Times as many: Thanksgiving comparison stories Ana peeled 6 potatoes and her uncle peeled 4 times as many, which is 24. A bar model shows one bar of 6 and four bars of 6.

Grade 5 2

  • Community dinner division: divide by 2 digits A food bank with 384 cans and 16 cans to a box fills 24 boxes. Estimate first: 400 ÷ 20 = 20, so the answer is a little more.
  • Community dinner multiplication: 2 digits by 2 digits 24 rows of 18 chairs is 432 chairs. Two partial products, 24 × 10 = 240 and 24 × 8 = 192, add to the answer.
