How it works
This alphabet checklist is not a worksheet for the child: the adult holds the pen. The letters are printed in order, Aa to Zz, so any letter is quick to find, and all 26 fit one page of Letter or A4.

Show the letters out of order
Point to letters on a chart or hold up cards in a mixed order, so the child cannot lean on the alphabet song, and tick the sheet as you go. Leave the box empty for a letter the child does not know yet. The empty boxes are the letters to work on next.
One case at a time, or one skill through the year
Where one case is taught before the other, the uppercase and the lowercase sheets take a case each and add a box for writing the letter. The sheet with three checks follows a single skill, written on its Skill line, from the first check of the year to the last.
- Tick in a different color at each check, and one alphabet checklist printable shows a whole year of progress.
- For practice between checks, a child can find and circle one letter at a time on the letter recognition worksheets.
- A name typed on the sheet stays in this browser.
Questions and answers
What is an alphabet checklist?
A one-page record of which letters a child knows. An adult ticks a box as the child names the uppercase letter, names the lowercase letter and says its sound.
Is there an alphabet checklist for the whole class?
Yes. The class sheet holds numbers, not ticks: how many uppercase letters, lowercase letters and sounds each pupil knows out of 26, counted from that pupil's own page. A class list can be pasted into its Name lines.
Can I use the alphabet checklist for letter sounds only?
Yes. The letter sounds sheet has one Sound box for each letter and a wide box to write what the child said, which helps when a child gives the letter's name in place of its sound.
