What the eight digits mean
Each digit has a place value: 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1. A is 01000001, a 64 and a 1, which makes 65, the code number of A. The binary numbers alphabet chart on the third sheet prints that number beside all 52 letters.
Capital and small letters
Capital letters are the numbers 65 to 90 and small letters 97 to 122, so a small letter is its capital plus 32. In binary only the third digit changes: A is 01000001 and a is 01100001.
- As a binary alphabet chart for kids, pair it with Write your name in binary: eight boxes a letter, one digit a box.
- The chart reads both ways. To turn binary into letters, split the digits into groups of eight and find each group.
- A space between two words has a code too: 00100000, the number 32.
Questions and answers
What is A in binary?
01000001 for the capital and 01100001 for the small letter. Those are 65 and 97, the code numbers of A and a in ASCII, written in base two with eight digits.
Why does every letter have eight digits?
A computer usually stores one letter in one byte, which is eight binary digits. ASCII needs seven of them, so every code on the chart starts with a 0.

Use a capital for the first letter and small letters for the rest, and copy the eight digits of each. Ava is 01000001 01110110 01100001.
Is there a binary code alphabet chart PDF?
