How this list was compiled: Our own selection and grouping of 160 English words for grade 5 spelling: sixteen lists of ten, one ending, root or set of sound-alike pairs to a list, with our own hints, misspellings and word parts. Every word was found in the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (https://www.ahdictionary.com/), read by script on 2026-10-01, one request at a time: 156 as headwords and 4 as forms printed in the entry of their base word (celebration, enjoyable, affordable, inventor); the meanings given for the ten homophones stand in those entries, and the three roots (graph, meter, phon) are given a Greek origin in its entries for -graph, -meter and -phone. The five homophone pairs have the same pronunciation in the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict). Each misspelling was checked against the system word list and that dictionary and is in neither. Spellings are American. The grade is our suggestion. No published word list or spelling program was copied. Licence: own work

Choose which endings to sort

A sort takes five words from the list on show and five from each of the two after it. Under More options, Word list picks the start: List 5 sorts able, ible and ant. List 9 sorts ance, ence and ar. List 13 sorts three roots: graph, meter and phon.

Missing letters, list by list

Choose Missing letters under What goes on the sheet and on Lists 1 to 15 each word prints without its ending or root: the ant of pleasant, the ible of flexible, the meter of kilometer. One list of ten fills the page, under a box of its words.

  • Under the tool each word has a hint for the adult: permit turns its t into double s in permission.
  • Opens at Small, Name and Date line off: every sheet fits 1 page. At Medium with the line on, most take 2.

Questions and answers

What spelling words should a 5th grader know?

The grade is our suggestion, not a school's list. We chose endings that sound alike and are spelled two ways (tion and sion, able and ible, ant and ent, ance and ence, ar and or), three Greek roots, and five pairs of homophones.

Do the spelling worksheets for grade 5 come with an answer key?

Yes. The key prints as the last page, with each word under its ending. Trace and write and Write a sentence print none. To leave the key off, untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options.

Can I use my own 5th grade spelling list?

Yes. Type up to 20 words in Your spelling words, one to a line, and they replace ours on the missing letters, unscramble, ABC order and word shapes sheets. The sort needs our lists, so typed words print to trace there.

Which homophones are on the 5th grade lists?

List 16 holds five pairs: principal and principle, stationary and stationery, capital and capitol, weather and whether, council and counsel. The hint for each word says which meaning goes with which spelling.
