How this list was compiled: Word list chosen for this site on 2026-10-09; the grade is our suggestion and the list follows no published program, exam or standard. Each meaning is written in our own words and was checked that day against the entry for the word in Wiktionary, the free dictionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license: it gives a sense the entry lists, in shorter words. The example sentence after each meaning is our own. Licence: own work

How it works

First grade vocabulary worksheets for matching: twelve words run down the left and their meanings, in another order, down the right. A child draws a line from each word, such as kitten, to its meaning, a very young cat.

Vocabulary worksheets for grade 1 readers

Every meaning is short and plain: damp is a little bit wet, and a porch is a covered place at the door of a house. For a shorter sheet, choose 6 or 8 in Pairs.

Your own words of the week

Type pairs in the box, one a line, as word = meaning: mitten = a glove that keeps the fingers together. Your pairs take the place of ours on the sheet.

  • Read the words aloud first. Under the tool each one has a sentence: The fawn hid in the tall grass.
  • Answer by has Cut and paste: fewer words print, with their meanings as tiles to cut out and glue beside them.

Questions and answers

What vocabulary words should a first grader know?

No list is official. Ours has words a first grader hears and starts to read: names of baby animals, action words such as stomp and peek, and where words such as between and toward. The grade is our suggestion.

Do the 1st grade vocabulary worksheets come with an answer key?

Yes. The key prints as the last page: the same sheet with a line drawn from each word to its meaning. To leave it out, open More options and uncheck Add an answer key as the last page.

Where do the meanings come from?

They are our own words. On 9 October 2026 each one was read against the senses that Wiktionary, the free dictionary, lists for the word.
