How this list was compiled: Sentences written for this site on 2026-10-02: 200 in five sets of 40, in the order the sound patterns are usually taught (short vowels; blends and sh, ch, th; silent e; vowel teams; words with ar, or and er). Half of each set are sentences to answer yes or no; half are a sentence followed by a line about it with three words to choose from. Every word belongs to the sound pattern of its set or an earlier one, or is one of 22 everyday words: a, and, be, by, down, for, go, her, is, me, my, no, of, one, put, the, to, two, was, we, with, you. The sound pattern of each word was checked by its spelling and by the first pronunciation listed for it in the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, a public record of General American pronunciation (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict), read on 2026-10-02. The everyday words are our own choice. No published word list, reader or reading program was copied. Licence: own work

How it works

These 1st grade reading worksheets print eight items a first grader can sound out, each with an answer to circle. Every item is one sentence, or one sentence and a line about it: there is no story and no passage.

Read the full guide

Two kinds of line

Half the lines are answered yes or no: A fox can fix a bus. The other half follow the sentence with a line about it and three words: Sam fed his pet hen a nut. Sam fed his ___. The child circles hen, pig or cat.

Five sets, in the order sounds are taught

Set starts on Short vowels and moves on to blends with sh, ch and th, silent e, vowel teams, and words with ar, or and er. A set uses its own sound pattern, the earlier ones and a short list of everyday words. All 200 sentences are listed under the tool.

Questions and answers

Are these 1st grade literacy worksheets stories with questions?

No. They stay small: one sentence to read, then yes or no, or one word to circle. There are no passages. Spelling and handwriting for the grade are on the pages linked below.

Which words do the sentences use?

Words that follow the sound pattern of the set or an earlier set, checked against a pronouncing dictionary, plus a short list of everyday words such as the, of, was and you. The source note under the list names every one.

How does a child answer a line with no blank?

By circling yes or no under the sentence. A bug has legs is yes; A rug can dig is no. The key shows the right word circled for every line.

Can I use my own sentences for reading practice?

Yes. Type one a line in the box above the sheet, then an equals sign, the right word, and a slash before each wrong one: The cat sat on a ___. = mat / map. Your lines replace ours.
