Ten tens, a century and a googol
Each themed list has 20 words. Counting to 100 splits the number: fifty Twos, twenty Fives, ten Tens. Words That Mean 100 looks further: a Century lasts 100 years, a Centipede is named for 100 feet, water boils at 100 degrees Celsius and a Googol is a 1 with 100 zeros.
Why day 100 is a counting day
Counting to 100 by ones and by tens is a kindergarten goal in the Common Core standards, and second grade calls 100 a bundle of ten tens. 100 of Everything holds things to count out: Marbles, Crayons, Blocks, a paper Chain of 100 Links. Under the list, two lines ask what you can do now that you could not on day one. To count along, print the hundreds chart.
- A tally of 100 is twenty bundles of five marks: quick to draw and quick to check.
- Four Quarters, ten Dimes or twenty Nickels make a dollar: three ways to show 100 cents with real coins.
- For kindergarten, start from Easy 100th Day: 39 words of 3 to 5 letters, Tens, Zero and Jar included.
Questions and answers
When is the 100th day of school?
No fixed date. Count every day school is in session from the first, skipping weekends, holidays and closures. Twenty full weeks make 100. More than half the states require 180 school days a year, which puts day 100 a little past the middle.
What is the 100th day of school?
The hundredth day a class has met since the school year began: a milestone worth a party. 100 is also the first number written with three digits.
What can you bring for 100 days of school?
Anything small and safe to count: 100 pennies, beads, stickers, stamps, pebbles or pieces of cereal. Glue them to a poster in ten rows of ten, or bag them in tens, so anyone can check the total at a glance.
