12 problems. Mixed ÷ mixed: halves and fourths. Sheet 9RLEWT, with its answer key.

How it works

Every free dividing mixed numbers worksheet works in three steps: turn each mixed number into an improper fraction, flip the divisor, and multiply. The key on page 2 prints all three and the answer in lowest terms.

Convert, flip, multiply

2 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 becomes 5/2 ÷ 5/4, then 5/2 × 4/5 = 20/10 = 2. Start with Mixed ÷ mixed: halves and fourths, where the numbers stay small. Flip only after converting: the reciprocal of 1 1/4 is 4/5, not 1 4/1.

With a fraction or a whole number

Dividing by a fraction under 1 gives more: 2 1/4 ÷ 3/4 = 3. Dividing by more than 1 gives less: 3/4 ÷ 1 1/2 = 1/2. A whole number flips to 1 over itself, so 4 1/2 ÷ 3 = 9/2 × 1/3.

  • Flipping 1 1/4 into 1 4/1 is the usual slip. Convert first, every time.

Questions and answers

How do you divide mixed numbers?

Change each mixed number to an improper fraction, flip the second, and multiply. 3 1/3 ÷ 1 1/2 = 10/3 × 2/3 = 20/9 = 2 2/9.

Is there a dividing fractions by mixed numbers worksheet?

Yes: Proper fraction ÷ mixed number puts the mixed number second, as in 3/4 ÷ 1 1/2 = 1/2. Whole number ÷ mixed number does the same with a whole number first.

What grade learns dividing mixed fractions?

In Common Core states, dividing fractions by fractions is grade 6, and mixed numbers come in as improper fractions. Pupils should already multiply mixed numbers from grade 5.

All 8 sheet types

Mixed number ÷ mixed number 3

  • Mixed ÷ mixed, cancel after the flip 1 1/2 ÷ 2 1/4 = 3/2 × 4/9. Cancel 3 with 9 and 2 with 4: 1/1 × 2/3 = 2/3.
  • Mixed ÷ mixed: halves and fourths 2 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 = 5/2 ÷ 5/4 = 5/2 × 4/5 = 20/10 = 2. Turn both into improper fractions first.
  • Mixed ÷ mixed: halves to eighths 3 1/3 ÷ 1 1/2 = 10/3 × 2/3 = 20/9 = 2 2/9. Write the answer as a mixed number in lowest terms.

With a fraction or a whole number 5

  • Mixed number ÷ proper fraction 2 1/4 ÷ 3/4 = 9/4 × 4/3 = 36/12 = 3. Dividing by a fraction under 1 gives more than you started with.
  • Mixed number ÷ unit fraction 1 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 3/2 × 4 = 12/2 = 6. There are 6 quarters in one and a half.
  • Mixed number ÷ whole number 4 1/2 ÷ 3 = 9/2 × 1/3 = 9/6 = 1 1/2. The whole number flips to 1 over itself.
  • Proper fraction ÷ mixed number 3/4 ÷ 1 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/3 = 6/12 = 1/2. Dividing by more than 1 leaves less than you started with.
  • Whole number ÷ mixed number 10 ÷ 2 1/2 = 10 × 2/5 = 20/5 = 4. Four pieces of 2 1/2 make 10.
