Parts of a fraction 12

  • denominator The number under the bar: the count of equal parts in all. In 5/8 the denominator is 8.
  • eighth A single piece of a thing cut into eight equal pieces. An eighth of 16 is 2.
  • fraction A number for a part, such as three fourths. 3/4 names three of four equal parts.
  • fraction bar The line that separates the top number from the bottom. It can be read as "over" or "divided by".
  • half Either piece of a thing cut into two equal pieces. Half of 18 is 9.
  • numerator The number over the bar: the count of parts taken. In 5/8 the numerator is 5.
  • quarter Any of the four equal parts of a whole. A quarter of 8 is 2. Another name is a fourth.
  • ratio How large one amount is next to another, as in 3 to 4. 3 red beads to 4 blue beads is the ratio 3 to 4.
  • slash The slanted stroke in a fraction typed on one line. 3/4 is typed with a slash.
  • third A single piece of a thing cut into three equal pieces. A third of 12 is 4.
  • unit fraction A fraction with 1 as its top number. 1/5 is a unit fraction.
  • whole The complete thing, equal to 1. A pizza cut into six slices is still one whole.

Kinds of fraction 12

  • common fraction A fraction shown as two integers, not as a decimal. 3/8 is a common fraction; 0.375 is not.
  • complex fraction A fraction with a fraction in its top or its bottom. 1/2 over 1/3 is a complex fraction; it equals 3/2.
  • compound fraction A fraction of a fraction. 3/4 of 5/7 is a compound fraction; it equals 15/28.
  • decimal fraction A fraction with 10, 100, 1000 and so on underneath. 37/100, written 0.37, is a decimal fraction.
  • Egyptian fraction A sum of different unit fractions. 1/2 + 1/3 is an Egyptian fraction for 5/6.
  • equivalent fractions Two or more fractions with one value, written differently. 2/3 and 4/6 are equivalent fractions.
  • improper fraction A fraction of 1 or more: its top is not the smaller number. 7/4 and 4/4 are improper fractions.
  • mixed number An integer joined to a fraction, as in two and a half. 4 2/3 is a mixed number equal to 14/3.
  • percent An amount out of 100, written with the sign %. 25 percent is 25/100, or 1/4.
  • proper fraction A fraction less than 1: its top number is the smaller. 2/3 is a proper fraction.
  • rational number A number equal to one integer divided by another. 0.2 is a rational number because it equals 1/5.
  • repeating decimal A decimal whose digits repeat in a pattern forever. 1/3 = 0.333...

Working with fractions 12

  • cancel To strike out a factor found in both top and bottom. In 6/8, cancel the factor 2 to get 3/4.
  • common denominator A bottom number that two or more fractions share. 1/2 and 1/3 can both be written with the common denominator 6.
  • compare To find which of two fractions is larger. 5/6 is greater than 3/4, because 10/12 is greater than 9/12.
  • convert To rewrite a number in another form. 1/4 converts to 0.25.
  • cross-multiplication Multiplying each top by the other fraction's bottom. For 2/3 and 4/6: 2 × 6 = 12 and 3 × 4 = 12, so they are equal.
  • greatest common divisor The biggest number by which every number in a set divides. For 12 and 18 it is 6.
  • invert To swap the numerator and the denominator. Inverting 2/5 gives 5/2.
  • least common denominator The smallest bottom number that fractions can share. For 1/4 and 1/6 it is 12.
  • least common multiple The smallest number that is a multiple of each given number. For 4 and 6 it is 12.
  • lowest terms The form of a fraction with no factor common to both parts. 3/8 is in lowest terms; 3/9 is not.
  • reciprocal What 1 becomes when it is divided by a number. The reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2.
  • simplify To bring a fraction down to its smallest numbers. 6/8 simplifies to 3/4.

How this list was compiled: Term list chosen for this site on 2026-10-02. Each meaning is written in our own words and was checked that day against the entry for the term in Wiktionary, the free dictionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, and, for equivalent fractions, compound fraction, lowest terms, least common denominator and the line between proper and improper fractions, against the article Fraction in English Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/), whose text is under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. Questions and answers

What are the parts of a fraction called?

The top number is the numerator and the bottom number is the denominator. The line between them is the fraction bar. In 5/8 the numerator is 5 and the denominator is 8.

What is the difference between a proper and an improper fraction?

A proper fraction is less than 1, so its top number is the smaller, as in 2/3. An improper fraction is 1 or more, as in 7/4 or 4/4, and can be rewritten as a mixed number.

What is a unit fraction?

A fraction with 1 as its top number, such as 1/5. An Egyptian fraction, in the second set, is a sum of different unit fractions, such as 1/2 + 1/3.

Does it print an answer key?

Yes, as the last page: the sheet again, with each term joined to its meaning by a line. The check box that removes it is under More options.
